I FINALLY spotted a Golf R outside a showroom tonight... Was at Glasgow Fort.
I always thought it was subtle in the press bumpf, but it's even more so in the metal. Looked well.

I saw a Golf R in Strathaven the other night. Was following me up the road. I thought it was an Audi until it turned in and I caught the Talladega's and the rear LED's.
Have to say for that reason I'm not too sure about the R's design... looks too much like an Audi wannabe IMO.
Although before you all take aim at me I do like the R as a car... just not a fan of the styling.
(Or the price/ value for money)

It's probably the DRLs which make it look Audi-esque. Other than that, I think the design is very VW-esque. :) I'm offended you think it looks like an Audi, because I hate Audis. Especially the RS3.

I saw one yesterday in Brixton rising Blue it looked the boll**ks, there was bloke driving it who must have been about 60yrs old he did give way to me though with a flash , think he new he new he couldnt compete with GTD

There's a white more door version in the west end/woodlands area almost every day. Nice.

I have to admit I think DRL's (LEDS versions) look poop on all cars, they are too bright, on mostly on during the day. They are also spreading them out to far so they are dots rather than a stripe, which would look better.

I just think all these cars have too similar styling when it comes to the body styling. I like the Golf R... I just wish it was more VW than Audi  styling.

To be honest penguin, that big front air scoop/air dam on the bumper started on the MK4 R32, so to me it's a continuation of that style. So perhaps Audi copied that from VW.
I like it!
-
Hey Danno,
I do agree that the IV R32 seems to have started the styling. The V R32 is also styled as such. So I can see your point that it is essentially a VW design and therefore VW is entitled to use it on the VI R.
But...
(I know ultimately they are all VAG cars but) what we have is an Audi TT, a VW Golf and a VW Scirocco all with the same front bumper patterns.
I like the GTI styling because it seems to be unique to the GTI. I would love the R styling more if it was only unique to the Golf R.
Secondly, and perhaps I haven't mentioned this, is my annoyance with LED running lights "Audi" style.
The general impression I get from the Golf R when I see one is that it really wanted to be an Audi... but didn't quite make it.
-
Penguin, not everything has to be so black and white!
I get your point about similarities on those cars. It's a trend thing at the mo with designers, sharp aggressive lines, strong angles and large air intakes. Remember back in the 90's a lot of cars were round and organic in design? Much like the current clothing fashion were looking back to the eighties, with the strong, almost boxy lines. Clearly it has a modem interpretation now though..anyway enough talking b@ll@cks
Re the LEDs: that's coming at us all like a train I'm afraid. EU legislation etc. Everyone's going to have them, especially as they are cheap, bright and last longer than standard bulbs.
I have to say though, I feel somewhat self conscious when I'm driving round. I sometimes think people look at me like I've put my foggies on to look cool, or worse that I've been to Halfords and put them on myself like a boy racer!!!!
-
Ps, re it wanting to be an Audi, where do you stop with that one??? A Leon R is a wanna be Golf R, a Golf R is a wanna be fast Audi, a fast Audi is a wanna be M5, an M5 is a wanna be Ferrari with 4 doors, a Ferrari is a wanna be F1 car!!!!
-

I can see your argument here...
The baffling bit being that the Golf R costs more than the comaprable Audi. Work that out?

It's quite simple mate, it's better than an Audi. Not being funny....

Oh you don't need to explain it to me.
I agree...
But to the pretentious fools who believe owning an Audi will bring susburban happiness to their best dressed driveway competiyion...they just don't see it.
I got offered a new S3 for about £1000 more than my GTI...and although the power, brakes and sometimes the traction would have been nice...the image would not.
For that reason, I'm out.
I'd rather pay more for the Golf, but then I'd want the car, not the badge...unlike many up my way nowadays.
-
Good point its about the car, and what's under the bonnet !!

:embarassed: I bought the GTI because I liked the badge
I was tempted by the s3 because at the time the 4wd 2.0T with DSG combination was pretty potent and fairly unique. Add into the mix a new s3 was pretty much the same price as a GTI and I began getting interested. The only problem was what Ess_Three said (That's a very ironic name when he is being critical of the s3 ha ha) with it being an Audi. I prefer the looks and image of the Golf over the Audi.

Loved it

I had an 8L S3 back in 2001 when they were unpopular...and the suburban fools were wearing BMW 3 Series / SUVs as their badge of honour.
Sold it when the image of 'Audi' went south round my neck of the woods.
The Forum name just stuck...

I've had a few oncoming drivers flash me in my R when I've done nowt wrong. I can only assume they think the DRLs are fog lights and they shouldn't be on.

Get that all the time on my xenon equipped GTI, so fecking annoying.

Gizzy, what DRLs do you get on the xenon GTI?

Must be dazzling to other driver's maybe???

The outer lights are on as DRLs the inner ones are the indicators, you need to look at a set of xenons on the GTI to know what I mean.
