can't decide what to do with the mk1 gti cabby so thought i'd get some opinions
at the moment it has the standard gti 1.8 8v engine found in the later cabbies, as far as i'm aware its a standard engine with that awesome stainless manifold i discovered the other day and a stainless janspeed exhaust
before taking it apart i was thinking of engine change like 20v turbo etc but now not so sure, so the options are:
1.keep it as is just fix it
2.fix it and tinker with the head/cam it etc etc get a decent amount of power from this engine
3.put a 2.0 8v or 16v
4. go all out with a big power engine (not a vr6 as i think it's too heavy for this car in my opinion)
cheers in advance for your opinions

Not sure i understand what needs fixing?
what state is the engine in at the moment... what would it need to make it perfect?
agree on no VR6... although id love to do it but would make it an impractical B road car then.
how much dosh have you got to chuck on your car?

2l 16v mate that will give you plenty enough power. 2nd hand engines are cheap enough, then spend cash on cams, pnp head, and if you can stretch to it itbs

As above 2.0 16v.

2.0l mate, spend extra cash youd save from the on the 1.8t to get it set up right, p+p head etc. Maybe even a lsd as the mk1s are lighter? I rekon the 1.8t would ruin the drive,

2.0 16v was my most likely choice, no need for it to be too fast want it to be a useable everyday car
as for whats wrong with the engine atm, head is off as i thought the head gasket had gone but it hadn't. but it also had this weird missfire and could never work out what was causing it :s was hoping a semi top end rebuild would sort it done everything electrical already
