Just wondering my 83 1.8gti seems to rev lots when on motorway it's got 14"vw alloys with 185/60r14 tyres so nothing different really there but at 70 im' doing like 3500rpm then at 80 it's closer to 4000rpm have read up that there are different ratios and that was wondering if they are interchangable between boex as 1-4 is fine but 5th just seems too close to 4 if they are avialable were and how much or do i need to get another box needs a new clutch i think so will be stripping dow at some point so whatever i need to do i can do it then hope someone can help

thanks for that i may have missed it as not got chance to go right through but any idea where i can get these gears and is it an easy job or best left to a specialist gearbox is the one thing i have never touched before i would have a go but don't want to mess it up

have a read thru brokevws site, it takes you thru a complete stripdown and rebuild on these engines. as for gears, unless you have deep pockets you'll want to source from 2nd hand gearboxes.
