Had new valve guides and the valve seats recut on a head that I have recently fitted to the rest of the engine and car..... Went to start it and no go because the engine has no compression.
My mechanic says that it is because the valve guides have been set wrong......
If so am I within my rights to take it back to the engineering shop and get them to correct their mistake without paying?
I still have the receipt, the part number is VGO11227 if that means anything to anyone?

Wasn't aware you could 'set' valve guides, its the valve seats that make the compression.
Are you sure you don't have your timing 180 degs out (open valves on the compression stroke) ...

As above, might be worth checking timing as a 1st step.

The timing was good, the mechanic checked I all over then did a compression test.
Ok so if it is the valve seats can I still take it back to the engineers n get them to correct it without forking out again?

If that is the case yes but I would be suprised if they got it that wrong to be honest.

were the compressions down on all cylinders?

Just spoke to the mech again. He took the head apart and re ground in the valves and poured diesel on them...everything was hunky doory with no leaks. The problem occurs when the cam is fitted. The valves are then too long to sit in the seats flush as though they have been cut too deep. The mech is going to see if he can shorten the valves in any way, if not then I think it's bye bye head......
Do I have any comeback to the engineering company as this is ported and polished head and wasn't cheap!

what type of head is it, hydro or solid lifter? and what type of cam is it? cant mix the 2 types. were the valves the right ones for the head?
edit: this assumes the engine is 8v. hydro head has 1 of the cam caps missing, solid lifter has a complete set

Was an 8v pb head and yes had one of the head caps missing so a hydro head. I got the vales from vee. W service because Ecp had already sent me the wrong ones. I just gave them my cars details n made sure try were the gti ones as thats where ecp went wrong.
The invoice says 91.9mm 11I part number 048-109-601A
The cam is a tsr 202 fast road cam with a vernier pulley to boot.

any decent engineering shop can shorten the valves as long as you know how much they need shortening to short and they wont fully open

048-109-601A is listed to be a PB inlet cam so that rules them out, and had a quick check on tsr site and 202 is listed for hydro head. maybe have a chat with tsr, they may be able to comment?

TSR 202 is 100% a hydraulic cam, split profile if your interested.
Has the head been skimmed

Yeah the head was skimmed, recut valve seats and new guides. Would the fact they used an old valve as a guide to recut the seats affect it? After the ecp mix up I didn't have a new one to give them but they said an old one would be fine?

I wonder if they have skimmed too much from the head.
