Title: Does this sound like the blue temp sender?
Post by: jmsheahan on 01 September 2010, 15:36
Hi all,

Few issues that have been plaguing my mk2 digi this week - wondered what the general opinion was on whether it's the blue temp sender at fault?

Car is reaking of exhaust fumes, popping on over-run, has a lumpy idle and is having trouble starting particularly when warm/hot. Plugs and exhaust are sooty so it must be overfuelling but not sure if it's the sensor buggering about with the fueling? Has only started doing it the past week or so.

Cheers

Hmm I replaced the blue temp sender on mine a couple of years ago, with a VW item, and just replaced it again as am having all the problems described in the OP!

Also the temp sender never solved my problem of hot starts, I do wonder if the problem actually lies elsewhere or if the temp sender I originally got from VW was a duffer. Will have to see what this second one does if anything!

After putting the temp sender in a couple of days ago I'm in the same position.

Lumpy idle (car shakes a bit when at traffic lights etc), smells of emissions from the exhaust and pops a bit on over run. Oil temp is a tad high (upto 110 when giving it some) and it's still being a bugger to start when hot, fine when cold. Ignition timing has been done and the car pulls ok.

Possibly something to do with the MAF? Reading the bible RJ tuning guide would getting the CO set up again possibly help?

Sounds like you're in the same position as me. I've had the CO set up properly on a proper machine which does sort the car out for a while but then it seems to soon slip back to where it was. It was suggested that it could be the errm air flow meter I think it is, I tried replacing mine with one from a lower mileage car but no joys. Might try getting a brand new meter or something next if this second temp sender doesn't sort it. Waiting to get it set up as the machine at the garage I use went up in flames the other day!! :undecided:

i had the same prob with mine a few weeks ago.i tried changing sensors etc but still the same.
in the end i had to take the throttle body thing off and give it a a good clean and it seemed to fix it.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I think I'm going to book it into a garage to get the CO checked as it can't do any harm.

I know this is an old topic but was there a resolve on this issue?  I have the same symptoms

The problem was a cracked valve in the end with mine  :undecided:

If your still on the original blue sender it's worth changing for the £15 they cost to be fair.

Yup still on the original temp sender so will replace that. I can smell fumes when I have my drivers window down really badly, otherwise car runs fine when cold but pops on overun and uses more fuel than it did. Exhaust is sooty and plugs are too. Idle is fine and no cold or hot startup issues. Engine has done 215k so maybe valve probs here also?

Sound like it's just running rich. Have a look at RJ's tuning guide: http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=33253.0
