Just got a mk2 1.8 8v on a pooberg, had one the same years ago on similar mileage and that pulles well up to the red line, whereas this on goes dead from 4k onwards. Anyone got any ideas whats going on there? I know it could do with a service but would that cure this as I'm not so sure it would tbh...

have a read thru the 2e2 faq, see if anything is obviously wrong with it. might be it just needs the timign checked
-
I can't find this section through the search, where is it?
-
here you go, its in the mk2 maintenance + info section :)

well I've given the pooberg a good once over and everything that end seems to be alright, so I guess the ignition timing is off slightly? Can I get away with adjusting the dizzy slightly?
-
yeah put the cam n crank to tdc to make sure everything is ok there, then check where the rotor arm is pointing. should be reasonably close to the notch on the dizzy housing. then can give it a bit of advance, take it for a drive, bit more, repeat till it starts pinking under load then back it off a bit and repeat till happy
ideally get a timing light to set it to factory marks, then work from there. but it can be done by ear on these.
might be worth looking at the vacuum stage 2 unit, make suire its actually pulling open the 2nd butterfly. if its split inside you'll only be able to get the 1st butterfly to open which would be fine up to a point then prob go flat
-
ahh good advice! Will have to try this tomorrow if the weather stays nice! Maybe a bit of a retarded question but how do I advance the timing, this isn't something I've ever had to do before!
-
you loosen off the dizzy, and spin it. sitting here thinking hard about the way it spins, i think its anti-clockwise to advance the ignition. might be wrong as my brain a bit frazzled today
-
is the second butterfly the top one I see when I removed the airbox? Or do I need to take the top half of the carb off to access the 2nd butterfly? I had the airbox off earlier and when I revved it the top butterfly flickered open
-
the top one is the choke flap, 2nd butterfly you can only see with carb off. however if you run the engien and watch the vacuum stage 2 unit on the back, you should see the lever on the bottom pull upwards as you rev it, this would suggest 2nd butterfly is opening just fine

ahh yes, I checked that, its working fine. Im going to try adavancing the timing a bit today and hope that cures it, and should be getting a gti cam anyday soon, so should all be sorted soon
