Is it worth it to get a used GTI MK5? What are the pros and cons and possible problems? Can VW rides do tranny swaps?
Please share your honest POV and opinions! Suggestions welcome!
Pretty confused on what ride to get really! In a dilemma between an Evo 9 MR GSR and a MK5!
I knw both are different in their own worlds, but my heart yearns for a GTI!
TIA!

Ask yourself... Do you want a super fast car, with fit & finish OR, a fast car that does it all.
Different types of car. GTI for me, but try asking the same question on an Evo owners' forum ..

Hi bro, since u got the MK5, what are the issues you've ran into with it?
-
New throttle body, new diverter valve and a new PCV. Not massively expensive repairs.
Other quirks are mine likes more oil than others' cars, probably because of the way it's used.
Generally not missed a beat. Bigger brakes and a re-map would be nice though.

Doesn't sound that bad after all! Im really considering a used MK5!
Any advices of what to look out for one which is about 3 years old and about 60K miles on it?  :embarassed: :nerd:

Plenty of receipts and a good service history!!! There is a lot of debate about Fixed vs Variable servicing, but I would (personally) expect to see at least 5-6 service stamps in the book for that car.
Oh aye.... make sure you get the desirable extra toys - Sat Nav, MFSW, highline, etc. :afro:
Mine is a poverty spec car and I regret not doing more homework on the matter...

If your other option is an EVO then the running costs of a GTI will be a huge relief

I bought a 5 year old Mk5 with 60k on 2 months ago, and it is brilliant! Mine has been looked after really well, has full VW service history and a load of receipts. Seeing as the service intervals for the cambelt are 4 yrs or 60k, i made sure this was done as part of the deal (get the waterpump done at the same time, no extra labour, part is roughly £40-£50)
The car is brilliant, i've fitted 4 new Falken FK452 tyres which in my opinion are fantastic, the car handles beautifully with loads of feel through the wheel. Yes, and EVO will be faster, but a lot more expensive to run and built like a black bin-bag on the inside. They handle well but in 5/6th gear they turnover at around 4k revs. (Last one i drove was a VII - was very fast and brilliant fun to blast down a back road but i wouldn't want to live with it)
I've had no issues so far, averaging 31mpg and loving the car.
