Hi all
I am trying to find a MK1 GTi for under a grand and have spotted one I may go lookig at.
Trouble is that it says it has a full webasto which worries me (non standard, body strength compromised, leaks!!!)
Anyone got any comments / advice?
Cheers

Is that the removeable rigid type roof? If so there was a brightly coloured one at GTI International this year. Personally I thought it looked ugly with the roof on.

No,
It's the black fabric type as used on MGs and 70's cars.
It slides on runners ( I think) to open up the whole of the roof section of the car (about the size of 2 - 3 normal sunroofs)
Just never heard of a golf with one before, wondered if it was anything special or if I should avoid like the plague ???

Nasty nasty, car wil flex all over the place!!

It would be ok if your car is a MK3 cortina or a marina, I would personally stay clear of it. My brother used to have one on his mini and it leaked like a seive. Ok if you intend keeping fish I suppose.

Dont be put off by it,i had one on my mk1 golf and it didnt leak and it was brilliant,it is quite rare aswell. ;D

vw fitted these 'WEBASTO' type sunroofs on the polo & lupo 'open air' models i've not heard or read any bad reports about them i can understand fears about security issues and also water leakage especially on roofs that have had a lot of use i.e. open/close operation, also it depends how long ago the roof was fitted these things do tend to 'ballon' when the car is driven at high speed which can also contribute towards it leaking water and give excessive wind noise,so check the seats for water staining and the carpets for dampness, if the roof was an after market fittment as i expect it is i dont expect that extra stiffening was fitted to compensate for the large roof area that was cut away so you may feel some scuttle shake when driven over bumpy surfaces, On the positive side when they are open it gives you far more open air drving feeling than the traditional glass type and in my opinion looks more 'sporty' but when closed well..........wyn

We used to have one fitted to a 1275GT mini when I was a kid - I have to agree it is nice when it is open - but they look bloody ugly when they are closed. Personally I would go for a cab if you really want the open air, otherwise keep looking for another mk1, be a shame to buy one that doesnt have the clean lines of a real tintop

I think the polo open air would have a far better quality hood being 20 years newer and factory fitted.
A lot of these types of hood as well as glass sunroofs are only fitted to hide dents or paint problems on the roof.

Sounds crap so i wouldn't bother ;)
