Title: BOOST ISSUES STILL , AFTER REMAP ?
Post by: snap-on on 30 August 2010, 21:37
Im still having boost issues with my aum . had nick do a mobile remap on my car and on road test he said it was laggy in the midrange and should pick up more instantly but doesnt so try doing the n249 bypass and then went which i did but made no difference . sometimes it picks up and goes but most of time the boost is on and off in the midrange when you try and floor it in 3rd and 4th on the bypass , it seems to just hold back ?

the other day after driving for around 30mins i had no boost at all , power was just flat with no pick up at all . parked up went to cinema and came out and car was fine again and hasnt done it since ?
its starting to p+ss me off now as the power is good one minute then not . had no codes before remap and no codes since (about 2mnths) but will check tom when at work to see if any codes stored from the other day .

have new - maf , n75 , jet suction pump , plugs , 007 (have tested it) , n75 bypass , kn panel , coolant temp sensor , thermostat , tb clean and reset , just passed mot emmissions easily , (all oem parts) . have checked all boost pipes etc .

could this be a map sensor fault (top of intercooler)?

i had same issue mate when i got mine mapped.. i then went for forge boost pipes and found out the reason was becuase the pipe conecting to intercooler was not on propely from the bottom  :lipsrsealed:.. it was out of sight for me to check.. but one of the good lads at r-tech  spoted it when changing it over for forge silicone one  ... jack it up or get on a ramp and have look at intercooler pipes

Have checked all boost pipes including the one you mention when i changed my cambelt and waterpump . have looked at on ramp again when i changed my front discs and pads the other week ! also i can grab hold of the actuator rod and move/pull on it so thats not siezed .

Dai-cymru had a similar issue with his AUM which we later found out was the MAF (brand new genuine item from VW too!).  One minute it was totally flat and the next is was wheel spinning all the way through 3rd gear

New owner has since replaced it and apparently it goes like stink now!

Might be worth trying to log the MAF values to see what the car is requesting  :undecided:  Or take the MAF off and make sure the parts are all there - on Dai's, part of it had fallen off   hence the intermittent problem

Just done a scan and the poxy 17705 again !! tried resetting tb but you cant hear it clicking ? same as when it was mapped he tried doing a tb reset and had to get out of car to see if he could hear it but left it ?
f+ucking car is gonna get broke for spares soon , wish i kept it standard power !

That's the code Dai had when it was the dodgy MAF.  He replaced a lot of the PCV system too to eliminate any leaks

How does it drive with the MAF disconnected?

I remember this one, we got told the car was in 100% good running order when you booked the remap, because you had done a full diagnostics session and fully checked the car out?
Your best bet is to do a fully logging session and find out why you are spooling up slow.  The TB aint going to be anything to do with it, its going to be PCV, or wastegate , or N249 system , N75 , vac pipe ect..

A good logging session should pin point it out or give you an idea which area to be looking in.

Same problem as with mine. I got rid of the PCV system and now the car is fine

Could be 101 things.

I would start with smoke test and a visual inspection inside the turbo to see how the wastegate is sitting.

My own AUM will only make 185bhp 200lbft even with a stage2 map???  A few hours logging on the road and trail and error testing shows its turbo related. It seems in the 150k life of the car its had the turbo re'cond and the ko3 compressor wheel used??

A remap is only as good as the car its going on so your best bet is get the car upto us so we can do you a propper logging session and find out why your down on power.

it's defo worth it too mate, Nick spent a few hours ragging mine about to find the problem (problems in the end)

I remember when you came and scanned it before you done anything and all was ok etc with your equip. Ive cleared the code and as usual the car goes a lot better and picks up quicker to but still not 100% and laggy in the mids .i could deal with that but just doesnt seem to stay that way though !  i cant see any visual leaks/splits/oil residue around the pcv crap . most of its been replaced with new though .
ive been on the phone to my local tps who are gonna do me another maf tomorrow so will see . it would be great to get car up to nick to find fault but tbh its a bloody long way and it took them around 5hours just to get to me due to heavy traffic etc + its goona cost me fuel and money to find/fix fault . to go up there a find its a turbo issue would be pointless as i wouldnt spend more money to get it done as it starts getting beyond a joke and time to call it a day as its now on 114k and ten yrs old . it may well be a boost pipe with a tiny hole/split but then to spend a ton on a forge boost pipe set to get rid of old crap seems to much if it isnt a pipe problem .
did have a smoke tester (snap on 700notes) but gave it back as to much money to not use it enough .
dont have vagcom only a modis and dont think i can log with that .

if i have no luck i will just out the car and go back to jap as the car owes me 4k already and its worth no where near that !!!

I know how you fell mate mines the same ...first i change the N75 ,but it was worse put the old 1 back on then it was better but today...it doing it again ...im thinking MAF  ....it does me head in keep checking for boost leak but cant find 1....no fault codes and the car ticks over fine ...when it does the problerm i try to dip the clutch give it loads of revs but nothing so just hold the throttle on the floor crawling along then ...boost wheels spining ....i hope i find out whats doing it or im going to sell it ,and say its standard ...it hasnt had a remap

The member Jonnyturbo had major turbo lag issues.  A 5 min health check of the actuator found the wastegate was bleeding the exhaust gasses off which caused the lag. Then a 5 min job to reset the actuator.  And now the turbo is spooling as it should and the car fliping pulls like a monster. Now running stage2 spec and 230bhp with a really wide torque band.

From day one Jonnies car has had issues, from being down on power running the stock map with a handful of fault codes, to running the spec1 remap with a N249 fault and having turbo lag and boost issues. But he has followed everything I have told him and took my advice, very little money spent getting the car running 110% maybe £180 max on parts then just his time.  No need to spend a ton on fancy Forge pipes, just find out which is the faulty item and replace it with a new OEM part.

If you dont want to spend time trying to work the issues out or you dont want to take half a day out and drive to us, I will try and talk you through it step by step.  It will be hard because you dont know how to use your Modis so I will give you all the things to test without the use of diagnostics tools

Job 1: PCV System

Take off boost side of PCV system off and check its working and not leaking.

Remove N249 / SAI plate from front of inlet
2 x 5mm allen bolt and 2 x 10mm nuts.

Remove main PCV pipe which connect to the nipple under the inlet manifold, pull green clip from crank breather tube,  remove one way check valve from rubber housing. and pull the hole mess of pipes out and inspect on the bench.    blow down the main pcv pipe which connected to the inlet and try to haer fro leaks ( I am 99.9% sure you will find a leak)  Main issues in this area are,
1: one was valve not fully shutting and leaking boost, a new upgrade G revision from TPS will set you back £7.
2: Rubber pipes with hair line split in the innder bends
3: Black plastic bit which is part of the brake servo line leaking, again a new upgrade revision from TPS £30

Let me know how you get on here, then we will go to the next stage ect..

Nick.

Ok cheers nick will try that first . im still waiting for the modis 2day training course to happen as the scanner has so much stuff on it and i keep finding different stuff eveytime i use it . found the measureing blocks last week to reprogramme the egr valves on the new vauxhalls etc , bloody nightmare . i dont use it all the time but i guess as you guys are constantly on yours its a walk in the park for you !!
if there are certain measurements/figures i could look at in live data then let me know as i can freeze frame them or record as i drive etc .
im sure its a pipe/vac/boost leak but just need to find it i guess .

Should be free, little force needed to pull it open.

As above, but if its to easy to pull then actuator is probably shot. Try a 10mm spanner inbetween the wastegate arm and pull away from the actuator housing, it should snap back nice and easy. This shows its closing the wastegate off correctly.

how can i free it iv soaked it in wd40 put its stuck ....i might put a screw driver on the back of the arm and hit it with a hammer ...to see if it frees it up...... :undecided:

dont hit it with a hammer, you need to prise the arm using a spanner

Update - fitted new dealer maf and still laggy in the mids and you can feel the boost on/off slightly rather then just pulling so i can now rule that out !!

tried moving my actuator and its free if i pull on it and it springs back , but wether its seating properly like nick said im not sure . still havent had time to inspect the pcv crap as my 5yr old daughter wants me to come straight home from work to go to the park as weather is nice so will try soon !

just wondered if this could also be a pencil coil issue due to increased boost from the map ? when uping the boost on the skylines you need to fit new uprated splitfire coils (300 notes) as the standard ones give spluttering issues at the top end of boost etc but mine doesnt do that but maybe one is breaking down under load ? trouble is that wouldnt keep giving the 17705 code i suppose !
Title: Re: BOOST ISSUES STILL , AFTER REMAP ?
Post by: Hulmie on 01 September 2010, 22:12
when was the last time you serviced the car. If a coil was going down then you would get a miss fire. There is no need to fit uprated coilpacks as the standard ones cope fine on a stage2 map.

now you have eliminated the MAF and the actuator springs back fine then really need to check the pcv system and the one way valve as Nick mentioned.
Title: Re: BOOST ISSUES STILL , AFTER REMAP ?
Post by: snap-on on 01 September 2010, 22:23
Didnt say i needed uprated coils was just stating a fact that you need to with the skylines when upping boost as they break down under load and nick has said before that when mapping it can show up previous probs that were there already but more due to more power . my car doesnt misfire but if one is breaking down slightly under load/boost then it could cause a prob .
its very well looked after and you can see what ive fitted at start of post as im a vehicle technician and this is the 1st (and last) vw ive owned ! ive always had jap (wrxs, skylines, evo and civic type r) and this is the only car that always has a prob wether it be the rear axle bushes , boost issues , pcv issues , waterpump/stat issues etc etc etc . i should of know better being that i fix all makes !!!
i would like to fix my issue with car but someone i know may want to buy it and if thats the case then back to jap it is

Will hopefully take a look at the pcv crap saturday so will let you know what i find ! also if your reading this nick , when you took my car out and said its laggy and doesnt instantly pick up like it should , i remember you saying it seems the dv wasnt shutting/opening when it should or there was a delay with it so try the bypass which i did but didnt make any difference . you also said try adjusting the screw in the boost solenoid in the tip pipe and try it then . i still havent done that so should i try ?

Ive been down on power for a while, lost the torque of the r tech map.Nick told me about my pcv leaking wen i had map ages ago!!!!lol.been getting worse yeah?.Today i put a new one way check valve under inlet manifold before the pcv one way check valve. My torque is back fighting. So now got two of these, cant believe the difference, omg!!!! Maybe something for yat to try!! got valve from us plastics 3/8 one way check valve.Dont give up bud, these as you know can be fantastic little cars.

sounds like mine, my actuator bracket is bent not allowing the wastgate to do its job.

Its gonna be either a yellow or white r34 skyline (i like em in yellow) , blobeye wrx sti or an integra type r dc5 in white only  i like the dc5 as there are not many around . skylines, wrx, evos are everywhere !insurance is not a problem either but will keep ya posted on what comes next
