Title: MK2 Audio Setup-Think I know what I want but wanted to run it by you guys?
Post by: JaffaGTI on 30 August 2010, 17:57
Ok ladies and gents I have spend the last couple of days trailing through past threads on audio set-ups.

I like varied genres, I am looking for a well balanced install, I'm not looking for ridiculous bass but don't want a bucket load of high range treble either.... :undecided:

I have decided on the following, if somebody in the know could tell me if I am on the right track it would be much appreciated!  :nerd:

In the dash:  http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/alpine-sxe-0825s.html (http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/alpine-sxe-0825s.html)
In the doors:  http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/jl-audio-evolution-c2-525x.html (http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/jl-audio-evolution-c2-525x.html)
Either side on parcel shelf:  http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/product/products_id/10678.html (http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/product/products_id/10678.html)
In an enclosure in the boot:  http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/jl-audio-8w3v3.html (http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/jl-audio-8w3v3.html)
Not too sure which amp to drive the sub with?

My Golf current has an Alpine head unit which I think will be fine?

I am a firm believer of comps up front and sub in the back and that is it.

Both amped, properly terminated cables and plenty of battery and alternator power for amps. Setup correctly will sound awesome.

I font like the soundstage being dragged to the back.

Ok cheers B-chi, I will give it a go.

So as an example,

If I went for the following setup:
http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/jl-audio-evolution-c2-525.html (http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/jl-audio-evolution-c2-525.html)
http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/jl-audio-j2-360-2.html (http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/jl-audio-j2-360-2.html)
http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/jl-audio-8w3v3.html (http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/jl-audio-8w3v3.html)

Would I have to put anything between the components and the amp as the components are spec'd at max 100 watts and the channels on the amp are 180 watts?

Yeah JL is good stuff mate.

I mean don't take my word as gospel. I know loads of guys on here run front and back and love it. Me, as said, not a fan.

The comps are 60w and the amp 180w @ 2ohm. Your comps will be 4ohm so say 100w. Just becareful setting your gains. Don't go too high.

All you need now is an amp for the sub. If the amp showed is bridgeable you could get another one for the sub and bridge the 2 channels to 1.

Could I get an amp that would run both?  Sorry, still learning......

It is possible to get a 2ch that will run tri mode. This is 2ch and a mono for sub. Or you could get a 4ch and bridge 2 of the channels into 1 to increase output on those ch.

For instance a 4x100w could do 2x100w & 1x200w roughly speaking.

I'll be selling my phd 2200 soon. Lovely sounding amp.

I would get a 4 channel amp, as it is more versatile and there is more scope for expansion later when you get the audio bug.

Some JL stuff is nice, but you pay a premium for it, there are other makes where you get more bang for you buck.

Any reason why you went for the 8" sub? You could have a 10 which would take up roughly 1.5cuft for a ported enclosure or a 12" which would roughly take up 2 - 2.5 cuft for a ported enclosure.

I would go for something like this:

http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/rainbow-slx230-deluxe.html
http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/jbl-gto1214.html
http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/spl-dynamics-ice150-4.html
http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/celsus-cnk4-4awg.html

Run two channels of the amp to the comps up front and bridge the rear channels to run the sub.
Its a great little starter system.

Remember the golden rule, 90% install, 10% equipment. ;)

Up front on the dash where the original 3.5" speakers are, take them out and put your tweeters there, use a thin metal bracket to align them the way you like, the refit the cover back over the top, it will look OEM but sound excellent.

good luck, any Q's fire away.

:)
