Title: WireZ MK3 16V as requested by Dom
Post by: WireZ on 27 August 2010, 14:37
How I bought her two and a half years ago:

Done a fair amount of stuff to her since...

Started with a heated highline interior from my old 16V:

This done for a while but after missing loads of black and blue Colour Concept interiors on ebay I bought a Yellow Colour concept and broke it with the intention of re-coating the centre panels/door cards which I'll prob do before winter:

Yes, yes... its noisy, and completely minted, but not permanent

16v Anni Clocks:

De-Arched, pretty much fully poly bushed, rear axle spacers machined from old stub axles, front 10mm spacers, Bilstein springs/dampers and machine polished:

MKIVed my Anni clocks and have a MK3.5 wheel and MK3.5 switches

I'll post up more cosmetic mods later.

Some breathing mods:

TB also ground and flowed, chipped.

Got one of these for £30:
Nice and OEM quiet.

Hotgolf flywheel as well from 9.5KG down to 5.5KG:

and one of these:

Passat short ratio 3.94 internals rebuilt into an ABF case:

Note to self: I will never rebuild another box as long as I live unless I have the proper tools!

At present with a passenger and a bootfull of luggage it matches a A4 170 TDi up to 85 (gave up at this speed) and empty it will horse an old Astra 1.6 SRi Turbo so it's reasonably nippy!

If I remember right from when I saw it it's a us spec centre console, but I may be wrong!

Looking good  How much of a difference to acceleration did the shorter ratio internals make?
Title: Re: WireZ MK3 16V as requested by Dom

Thanks for the comments folks...  Not at home at the moment so don't have access to all the pics.

Yup @ Dom; it is a US Spec centre console- Cheap as chips on ebay.com (just be carefull with postage) but to everyone - make sure you get the leather gaiter as the plastic one is gash.  Metal bracket can be had from VW UK for about £6 but the PN is at home on my PC.

@ Jimp: It makes a big difference to acceleration.  Airbox, TB, exhaust mods, Hotgolf flywheel (makes a big difference on its own) and a chip will probably only make a few BHP.  In effect its like having another 25-30 brake on tap and for a 4MPG hit on cruising it's well worth it.  I can still easily make 40-41ish mpg on the MFA at 50-60mph and get over 400 miles to a tank.  The ABF should have shipped like that from the factory - not too short at all and makes overtaking a breeze.  Still think it's not quite as nippy as it should be but trying to get to the bottom of it.

Sounds like the new internals are a great mod. I really like the idea, most people ignore stuff like drive ratios. Good thinking :afro:

It was Ess Three who put me in mind of swapping the final drive... It does make a nice difference and it's a common mod for the 16V and VR6 and it would be pretty rapid with some headwork and cams.

The seats are minted but I'm red faced every time I see someone look in the car...  Just need some ££ so I can redye them black- which wil be spring at the earliest now.  Typically so broke it's not even funny.  I could do wonders if I had some cold hard cash to spend.   I'd love to shove in a diesel crank, flow the head, stick some cams in it then megasquirt it.  The ability isn't an issue - The ££ is.

Anyway heres some more pics I dug out earlier:

By my own hand:

Some nice pics I found from this April:

It does look rather different now - New VW Polo centrecaps, CL tailgate which should have been replaced back to standard GTi this weekend if I wasn't snowed in LOL. Rear lights are back to standard GTi given the M3 items persistently leak no matter what I try to seal them.  I was hoping my 4300K HID kit would have turned up today but it didn't :(

Toying with the idea of blacking the Grille and headlamps given the lamp covers need resprayed and that I also have a spare grille to play with.  The standard arch kit will be going back on come spring too which I hope will complement the balck grille and hella lamp covers.  Not sure TBH

Thinking about one of the following when I stick the standard arches back on but currently undecided:

I would leave the arches off.
Title: Re: WireZ MK3 16V as requested by Dom
Post by: WireZ on 27 November 2010, 22:51
I do kinda like it with, and without, the arches but thay are a tad untidy - nothing serious that I wont remove and dress but I can't afford a respray at present so arches it is.

Here's some more rubbish that I've been up to:

Frosted some blue LEDs and 50k resistors in the end to get output in the OE range, total fiddle but worth it:

AC Switch was custom again with frosted red LEDs and 50K resistors,  was still a touch on the bright side so pinched some nail varnish from my better half...

Took me an age to get my hands on one of these:

Much nicer but do think that the blue dials cause a great deal of eye strain at night.

Cheers for the positive replys folks

I'm definite on the black lamp covers and grille but still undecided on badge or no badge.

Fitted my 4300k HIDs yesterday - driving home at night going to be a little safer now.

Plans are arches back on come spring, dye the Colour Concept Recaros, recover the headlining in black, new MK4 airbag and thats the interior pretty much done, alloys refurbed, bit of bodywork tidying and if I can get a new job hopefully I can start a complete tasty engine rebuild on the spare motor in earnest.

Sweet! Thats a pretty awesome list of plans! If you get bored after that list of jobs you can build me an engine too

That's some good mod's, mk3's always look better without the arches plus they are a water/ rust trap.

Debadged all the way, everyone knows it's a VW, just looks alot cleaner imo.

Where about did you get the guts for the gearbox? Fancy having a bash at something for when I finally get round to my ABF

Overall though, cool golf

From an 89 pr 90 Passat.  I think the gearbox code is AYH or AYK.   Many of the (3A?) Passats with 02A cable change boxes sport 3.94 final drives and varying gearsets.  Some even have a 4.2 final drive - I had a shot at one in the scrappies last year but passed it up as my car needs to be a daily driver.

Dom; I'm only going to say one thing - don't bother modding the engine as for what you'd spend you'd be better off sticking in a 16V or VR6 or 1.8T if you want to go the extra mile.

I'd love a 1.8T, personally I don't see the point in spending time/money dropping a 16v or VR6 in when I could just go out any buy one ready made. If you ever move further south again and I end up doing it you can give me some pointers

Good lad Dom ; That's the right attitude.  Never seen the point in doing an upgrade swap either.  I did however spend 3 days in July fitting a 'new' 80K 16V when I fitted my new box.  Took no time at all removing and fitting...  all the stripping and sorting of the replacement engine took forever.

To be honest I wouldn't even know where to start with an engine conversion. I could research and source parts etc, but the actual swop i'd be crap at!

I doubt that very much Dom - I'm sure you're more than up to the task of a swap.

+2 I prefer that front end too

Thanks for the info, I have the original 2Y g/box so may just stick with that for the time being. Currently lost in a world of g/box codes, old c/gti threads and ratio calculators

Well not much to report... crap weather kinda puts a stint on things...

Anyway got fed up of the awful whine from my front offside and decided enough was enough...

At least it didn't rain...

Set up the camber and tracking today :)  New front shoes next.
