Hmmm, i'm thinking of swopping out my rcd510 for one of these. I see a few of you have already done this...
Well, my question is....I know that the * button is for voice control, however is the voice control built into the rns or is other stuff required?
IF nothing else is required is it just a case of enabling this through VAGCOM?
cheers, Stu

Voice control needs a mic to be fitted.
You can get the specific VW mics for about £10 on eBay and fit one, or you can fit a standard mic and rewire it.
The * button is only a graphic - as the older RNS' had different buttons there, but they do the same thing. I think one had an 'i' and another had something else?
I have my * button programmed to be 'repeat last command' - as I haven't bothered fitting the voice control.
Swapping your RCD for the RNS will require a bit of VagCom coding to get it all working with your MFD.

Thanks for the quick reply
So, even without adding the voice control it is not plug and play?
Problem is, i live down under and i don't know how i'd go about getting the Vagcom bit done except for maybe the dealers?? And i don't have a lot of confidence in them as they reckoned they needed a code from Germany to disable the DRL's  (since did it myself in the garage in about 10 seconds )

Yes it is plug and play to an extent.
You will be able to use it and all its features but you won't get the extras without it being VAG.COM'd
Buttons on the steering wheel working, MFD showing directions, Rear view camera working (if you have one)

Maybe I was lucky, but mine was 100% plug and play. Everything worked first time, including heated seat/AC display, parking sensor display and steering wheel buttons. I can only assume that it had been set up for a MkVI Golf, as I have been told (on here) that VAGCOM is normally required to match up the RNS to your car.

Stupot,
I'm in Australia too mate.
I have wired in a mic on my factory fit RNS and have only limited voice control. I can change radio stations and go from hdd to mdi etc when selecting music source. Our crappy V3 maps ($650) over here will not allow me to select a sat nav destination via voice control. The unit is capable of doing it, the software is not. A bit like the live traffic reports that VW will not enable over here as well.

Thanks Stu!
Good to know, thanks for that. $650 for the maps? Ouch! Yes, knew about the traffic reports not working here. How new is your vehicle/rns?
