Alright everyone,
I've got a 92 mk2 golf 16v & i want to put some new rear bumps stops on. Can anyone tell me if this is difficult to do?? Remember i am of limited spanner ability!!
Oh, & do i need any specialist tools to do it??

nah pretty easy, mostly just spanner and socket

Cool, looks like you undo em at the top, drop the dampers out, stick the new bump stops on, put em back on???
Or am i way,way off the mark??? :undecided:

yeah thats about it, can't think of anything too tricky with the whole thing? there are alot of washers etc so just keep them in order and you shouldn't have any probs.

Not too bad a job, but better to get a mate to give you a hand.
The hardest bit is getting the struts out, unless you drop both sides at the same time, which i wouldn't personally do.

If the bump stops are worn, chances are the rubber spring seats are too. Check this guide on what to check and how to replace em. It covers bump-stops too :smiley:

Spring compressors? I don't think you actually need them to do the rears, from what I've heard a mate pressing down on them a bit is enough to get them back together again. Although if you can get some probably a good idea :wink:

Yeah you won't need compressors on the rear, thats for sure. Why are you changing the bump stops? didn't they get done when the koni/eibachs went on?

You may need to cut the bump stops down slightly if you've lowered the car by a large ammount though, usually by the same ammount you've dropped from std, so a 40mm drop = 40mm cut off bump stops :smiley:

But not on the rears. Usually only fit shortened bump stops on the fronts :wink:

Hmm, I heard it was only on the rears, as the front bump stops are pretty tiny anyway!? If you don't cut the rears down you end up sitting on the bumpstops which will knacker them in a short time...
Edit: Note this is what I've heard from other dubbers who have done it, not my own personal experience. When I fit my lowered suspension what I'm going to do is make a note of the bump stop clearance on the std shocks, then when the new stuff is fitted make sure the bumpstops are trimmed to the same ammount if you get me?

No mate, went to a back street garage to have it fitted :shocked: Its sagging a bit & knocking too over larger bumps. Its not lowered loads it should be about 35mm.

Probabvly be OK by that much anyway, knocking sounds like you defo need to get the bumpstops & rubber spring cups sorted. But it could also be beam bushes! Sort the suspension out then get back to us :smiley:

Have you had a look under the wheel matt? see what condition the bump stops are in.
Jonny, places such as c&r sell shortened bump stops for the fronts to go with their kits, i don't think they do them for the rears :laugh:
If the rear suspension is resting on the bump stops then it could be one of a few things, the suspension is adjustable (many rears are, konis are) and is set too low, the upper spring plate has corroded away, or could just be the rear calipers are sticking causing the rear suspension to sag.

It has always sagged a touch, i don't think its the calipers, as i had one of them replaced due to it being siezed. Konis adjustable?? I'm not sure mine are. How & where would i adjust them? Sorry for my ignorance people, bear with me :embarassed:

What koni kit have you got?
I think even the basic koni shocks have ride adjustable rears, but fixed on the front.
The way it works is there is a circlip under the lower spring plate, once you have taken the strut out, you can move this up or down as you wish.
How low are the backs? can you put your hand under the arch ?

Just the basic koni eibach combo, I can adjust the stiffness at the front. Yeah you can get your hand under, but put anything in the boot & you've got no chance :undecided: Just been told by various peeps the bump stops could be fooked causing this, sound about right?

You've got ride adjustable shocks, so yes you will have height adjustable rears.
Jack the car up just enough so you can see under the arch, check the condition of the bump stops. If they in one piece then check what height adjustment the rears are on, you can do this by looking at the bottom of the shock under the spring plate, count how many grooves there are.

How cool! Sorry for all the questions mate, but i really had no idea about the height adjustment. I was almost sure there was no adjustment. So i'm looking for grooves at the top of the damper??? :undecided:

Look for grooves under the bottom spring plate, so at the bottom of the damper.

Right been & had a look, as best i can in the car park at work, stuck my hand in & had a feel round :huh: & at the bottom of the spring I can feel a groove, is that it?? if it is, how do i change the ride height?

You need to remove the strut off the car, dismantle the strut, move the circlip, then reassemble.
