Hi guys, didn't know the best way to do this so thought I just stick up a topic.
Background
I have a mk6 GTI DSG with 17 inch Monza wheels. My driving style contains some exuberant country road mixed with cruising gently and occasional hard acceleration in a straight line. I don't really do trackdays but I have been round Knockhill and the obligatory 'Ring. This is just so people know what I need and use my rubber for. :nerd:
My car came with Bridgestone Potenzas which I found were a bit dreadful. They spun the wheels in the dry (even more so in the wet) and had IMO very low limits when driving spiritedly. (I also wish to add my Potenzas were made in Poland - can't remember if there was a warning about a bad batch made in Poland :undecided:)
My front 2 lasted around 10k miles at which point I got Dunlop Sport Maxx. These were brilliant. They had excellent grip in the dry but did lose a little in the wet. They lasted around 10k also.
I have now bought 4x Michelin Pilot Sport 3 after some advice on here and various tyre reviews. It was a tough choice leaving the Dunlops as I didn't want to fork out for tyres which turned out to be worse.
Verdict
They are epic. It's been pouring all day and the tyres just grip in the wet. It is almost like 4wd compared to the previous tyres. The tyres have huge water channels which I have really appreciated - it still grips driving through standing water. It feels unbelievably stable also and perhaps a little more comfortable. (not been able to test in the dry yet).
Another feature is the rim protection design which hopefully will never need to be tested (but reassuring nonetheless).
I would advise anyone looking for tyres to give these a try
I also like the way they look which I consider important

Read reveiw of tyres in latest Autocar. 16" on Golf, 17" on Mercedes C Class.
Also, a short Tyre Test in the latest What Car.
Both interesting reading.
-
I've not seen gossa on here for a while, busy on two wheels probably, but he bought some PS3s back along and was impressed by them from what I recall.
-
Probably a good call, I've had P/S's on other cars and must say they were very good. Might go for them on this one when the time comes.

+1 cant wait for mine to wear down dunlops wont even shread tough tyre??

Great post PenguinGTI and many thanks. I shall definatly go for Michelin Pilot Sport 3's when my tyres are knackered.
I do however drive like a big wuss in the wet though
I'd be interested to see how you report they are in the dry?
-
I am running these on the front after my Pothole incident.
Noticeably better grip, than the Dunlops, coming off roundabouts in the wet and better traction when accelerating hard from lower speeds.
Great grip in the dry as well.
I noticed the same with the PS2s when I had them on the MK5.
Also gave much better fuel economy than the Goodyear Asymmetrics they replaced.
Highly recommended.
-
Great post as usual from you Penguin.
The Autocar review threw up interesting results for 16" FWD and 17" RWD cars.
I wish I could find reviews of 18" tyres on FWD cars. Might throw up more different results.
FWD 16" - 1st Vredestein Ultrac Cento, 2nd Bridgestone Potenza RE050A and Continental SportContact 3, 4th Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric
RWD 17" - 1st Continental SportContact 3, 2nd Dunlop Sport Maxx TT and Michelin Pilot Sport 3, 4th Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric

Thanks am1w,
I will put up my verdict on them in the dry when Scotland becomes a little drier
I did get a couple of dry patches today and they grip really well. But by far I am most impressed with the wet capabilities.
-
Hi Penguin.
There is nothing like a personal recommendation. SteveP also loves these tyres.
-
You cant go wrong with the PS3's or F1's  :nerd:
-
Interesting post, Penguin, thanks for sharing. I have always been partial to Michelin tyres - reassuringly expensive, and all that - and I will definitely be getting some PS3s when my Pirellis are shot.

Two German reviews here;
There are other contenders, depending on your priorities (wet/dry/economy/wear)

Well my rubber came in at £120 a corner. The Dunlops were around £20 a corner cheaper but this was only because my local garage was out of stock of the Michelins and had to out-source them for me.
Been out in the dry tonight. My word they are good. Easily worth the £20 a corner.
As an aside, might it be an idea to put a thread like this in the mk6 maintenance and tips section so people can easily find mk6 owners own reviews of rubber? (maybe a poll or something to show general preferences?)
I do thank SteveP if he gets round to reading this post as it was him amongst others that first mentioned the Pilot Sport 3 on this car.

Penguin:
Looking through all the tyre reviews, the Continentals also seem to be ace. Why are they not popular with GTi owners, I wonder?
-
I think perhaps is the brand image.
Dunlop, Bridgestone and Michelin all have notable motor sport sponsorship.
Apart from that no idea :undecided:
-
I have to admit i like the Bridgestone Potenza RE050A's

Another vote for PS3's here.
Having used PS2's on my ED30 and cover a lot of miles on them both on the daily commute and a few trips to the ring, can 100% say the PS3's are a step up.
Wet handling is the biggest area of improvement over the PS2's along with the better rim protection.
I also think for balance between handling, ride, noise and lifespan they simply can't be beaten.
-
Hi guys,
Anothers thumbs up for PS3’s. They replaced my Conti 2’s on my ED30 at 16,000 (they were shot), difference is night and day.
Expensive but worth the outlay for the extra security and grip + I also got them to stick nitrogen in them for £3 a pop.
Tyre pressures were more stable in the hot summer days.
Great product!
Cheers... Hotrod

I will be getting ps3's next for mine, but what would you say are the next best tyre? No don't say GYf1's think they are rubbish!!???

Michelin's have been my tyre of choice for many years now. They are very good in the wet and dry conditions but best of all they out live any other competitor. Wait and see what milage you get out of them. Let us know

will do.

I thought the PS3's were OK but am now running Vredestien Sessantas and these are better than the Michys IMO. I would say the Micheys are marginally better than the much slated Dunlops (which I found to be a good tyre).
I'll be sticking with the Verdys from now on though, fantastic tyre.
-
My local stealer is offering to replace my two front Dunlops (very worn) and will charge £130 per tyre (it's currently being serviced). I've declined their offer - but would love to get myself two x PS3s after reading the positive feedback over the last few days - so what price should I be expected to pay???
-
My local rubber place quoted me £110 a corner initially for ps3. They eventually had to outsource them though so it came in at £120 a corner.
My Dunlop options were £93 a corner. (Kwik fit quoted these at £140 a corner so I didn't go to them)
I don't know how much the ps3's would be elsewhere.
-
I think PS3 didn't do that well in a recent tyre test. I think Conti won the tyre test with both EVO and Autocar. However, if you are a Costco member, they sometimes do promotion for Michelin tyres-buy 4 for the price of 3!
-
They are epic.
Im sure i was telling u guys about these tyres months ago. Ive had them on mine for awhile now, Still no complaints best ive had so far and ive been though alot, Bridgestone,sportshyte,Contact3's,avalons also. PS3 takes it by a landslide

I think you did. Some credit to jdjd

Brilliant price that

Hey, just noticed this post, where did you get them from and where did you get them fitted? Im considering these too for my Ed30.
-
can you guys throw some feedback on the steering response with Michy 3s? Big time PS2 user here, after GS-D3s were gone, switched to PS2s and would never put elese on my cars. Thanks
-
£129 from www.mytyres.co.uk (http://www.mytyres.co.uk) get another 3% off if you go via an affiliate link like www.quidco.com (http://www.quidco.com)
http://www.camskill.co.uk (http://www.camskill.co.uk) for £124. Not sure about P&P or fitting though.
Costco have always been the cheapest for me on Michelins.
-
Guys you might as well shop locally, my PS3's were about £140 each fitted, most tyre dealers don't like fitting mail ordered tyres so charge a premium or do a dodgy balance just to teach you a lesson!
-
I've actually found the opposite. With times being hard they are grateful of your business and they actually advertise on the mail orders sites stating their full costs etc. You can even get them delivered there.
-
My neighbour who's a mobile tyre fitter does mine for a 6 pack :smug:
Gossa what you up to man?? what's with the alloy's??

Got my monzas sorted so the R wheels are for sale with Pilot Sport 3 fronts and the Dunlop rears. In the for sale section mate.
-
Gossa, where did you get your monza's done in the end? Did they do a good job and how much if you don't mind me asking for the record? Thanks MAW73
P.S always liked the look of the R wheels on your car. Would you buy reps again?

Got my wheels refurbed at Spit and Polish, they have done a good job eventually but dob't go near them with a barge pole, bunch of muppets!
Would I buy reps again? Absolutely, no difference in my eyes. If they don't sell I'll paint them black and use them for winter!
-
Thanks Gossa, If I didn't have my interlagos wheels kicking around in the garage for winter I would have taken those of your hands. I personally think they look really nice in silver on a red car and black would suit a white car more.
Its good to know your positive opionion on rep wheels. I think if you keep to a fairly basic design and finish like the R wheels you can't go wrong with reps.
I've managed to somehow keep my Monza's pretty well pristine, however I'm sure the day will come when they need a refurb.
-
Not really pushed my car since having these on. But of course had a few cheekey quick turns around some corners etcs. And they seem very positive tyre compared with the pirells on before. Less tyre noise also which was a bonus. And in the wet very good also even though not really had much wet weather to test.
In all well worth the money.
-
Wht car are you driving? ^^
-
Did my first proper UK track day on my PS3's today and they held up pretty well, they have grained up a lot on the outer edge but given the high speed corners of the Silverstone new GP circuit it's not surprising. Once they got hot the grip was awesome for a road tyre and helped me show a clean pair of heals to a lot of cars that didn't expect a Golf GTI to
Also did probably 20+ runs on a very very tight and twisty auto test course course and again they performed really well. So these are certainly going to remain my tyres of choice for the road but will be investing in some track day tyres for the future.
