pour boiling water over them as alot of the grime will be wax from your inner wings, bear in mind with all this though, you can expose all sorts of stuuf that was protected by grease etc so it'll go all rusty then you'll try to paint it then you'll start to chrome the odd bit and before you know it your spending your weekends polishing your engine!

GUNK is the stuff for getting the grim off your head and gearbox. Comes in either a spray can or a tin. I've got a before and after side by side pic of my 8v if you want to see it.

Well i am doing mine by hand?

Mine looks very clean?

I just take it apart clean it and re-fit. I use turps on a rag and a stiff small brush.

Couple of hours later looks much better.

the rust by the battery and on the chasis on that side, mine has that is that all repairable?

the metal there is structural if it was at the point of no return then the car would be a right off. it's usually just surface rust that can be sanded down and repainted unless u want to be extra posh and smooth the chassis leg down so it's super sweet.

Mine is just surface rust as well. Put some rust treatment on then sand it down and re-paint. Car may of had a leaking battey at some stage in it's life.

I hate that de greaser smell, it hangs around the drive way for days sooooo

Go to your petrol station with a plastic bag, your de greaser, park your car up, spray on de greaser (you want to leav it on for 10 mins) slow walk into petrol station to pay for jet wash, slow walk out, use the jet wash, remove plastic bag, leave the smell and mess at your petrol station and enjoy teh drive home

I always thought it smelt like petrol? :undecided:
here's a pic which looks bad, but really I'd just soaked the manifold when it was fully warmed up.?
Look how clean the head is after I've degreased it! Pitty about the rocker cover, although that was replaced with a chrome one soon after the pic.

I never covered anything. just sprayed it on whilst it was running and warm. left it for a minute and then hosed it off. some really stuck on areas might need a bit of toothbrush action to shift the grim.
