Title: 2 seater roadster heading for production
Post by: topher on 16 January 2005, 15:19
Have a read

I'd say it's likely competition will be along the lines of the RX8, so hopefully the pricing will reflect that ! I particularly like the mention of the supercharged AND turbocharged engine

If it ends up looking as good as the concept, I want one!

Turbo and supercharger, so you take it to Revo and Pitstop

looks very nice, bit "pretty" though. needs some edges.

at least they talk about weight, but theres nothing spectacular about it as at 2500lbs it still comes in a slightly more than an MGTF, which is heavy.

its competition will be MGTF, MX5, MR2 and Barchetta.

the talk of the engine is kinda worrying. the problem with mid engined cars is space. they dont have any. fitting a turbo is easy - but you lose the boot. the VXT has a turbo and a pencil case laughingly called a boot, on the other end of the scale a TF has a large boot (for mid engined) but limited engine options.

its going to be interesting, althoug Dr P's days are numbered. he has seriously screwed up with the Phateon, Bugatti development is not going well, and the Mk5 Golf isn't exactly a blockbuster. Plus he has staff worries at home.

thats going to be a major problem i think. the mid engined market that VW falls into is not a mega bucks money and the competition is tough.

yet they seem to think VW is a premium brand and commands a premium over other similar cars. in the past VW were not a premium brand, they made affordable cars that were extremely reliable.

apart from the karmann ghia i cant recall vw making sports cars what others were there?, going by recent vw decisions its going to be overpriced in markets it has poor standing in.
last sports car i remember them trying to do ended up with an Lt van engine and they dumped it with porsche as they run out of cash.
cant see it taking off unless they keep the price sensible ie dont try to compete with porsche, audi, bmw, tvr et al. but going by the supercharge, turbo talk it sound like its going to break the bank.
