Hiya
Can somebody suggest a tool for this? You need to hold the outer 22mm bolt whilst turning the inner hex key or vice versa.
Got the one that haynes suggest (Sealy 28 (http://www.sealey.co.uk/PLPageBuilder.asp?gotonode=ViewProduct&method=mViewProduct&productid=8383 (http://www.sealey.co.uk/PLPageBuilder.asp?gotonode=ViewProduct&method=mViewProduct&productid=8383)) or whatever) but it doesnt fit.

James

Mole grips and a 7mm allen key, always worked for me

+1 I did the same

ok will try that. I also wondered about a ring spanner with a deep ring bit? Might pop to Halfords tomorrow and look.

Blow torch, Drill, Chizle and a Hammer are the tools i used for the front strut bolts on my estate
but on the last mk3 i just grinded down a 21/22mm socket so i could hold it with a wrench and put the allen key through the top - i found it pretty hard to get a proper grip with mole grips :)

Spark plug socket with allen key if i remember right.
An offset ring spanner will also work.
For all you people using molegrips, bodge it merchants

Got mine straight off today with a windy gun
-
22mil swan neck ring spanner and a 7mil allen key.
I used a socket allen key in my socket wrench, got them both from a local tool shop for £16 if I remember right. As soon as I asked for the swan neck spanner he asked if I was doing the suspension on a VW :P

yep that has always worked for me mole grips 22mm and allen key works everytime unless u have air gun:))
-
get the proper tool and save messing about with mole grips :P just ask in any proper tool shop for a swan neck ring spanner 22mil :)
-
As said earlier a spark plug socket fits on and it has flat edges to fit a spanner onto whilst you fit your 7mm allen key down the hole in the middle.
22mm deep offset ring spanner also works well.
Impact gun also works but they don't recommend you use them on your shocks.

ok - swan neck spanner thingy ordered - £6.55 delivered.
Bored now - might examine the plug spanner option.

I used the spark plug socket and the impact gun. Worked a treat every time and quicker and easier than mole grips and probably safer by the sounds of it
-
new VAG nuts need a lambda probe/diesel injector socket as they're a larger size :)
-
Broke one of mine - busted out the allen key bit!
So had to use an air-tool gun!
-
same here, though i didnt snap the allen key it ended up a nice spiral shape
windy gun made short work of it

I used a ring spanner that looked like this:

Combined with an allen key in the centre to keep the strut in place.
-
good! Thats what I ordered.

thats the correct tool. just make sure the allen key is nice and chunky, or a socket one like I used, otherwise it will be harder to turn and will probably break if its still the original nuts :)
