Iv'e posted this in the new members section too but thought i'd add it here as it'll be an ongoing project of fun, scuffed knuckles and generally swearing at the car as i take it all apart. I've had the car for a little over a week now so starting with some of the easy bits first.
Thought i'd post some pictures of my latest toy, always wanted a big bumper GTI but never got round to owning one. Not had a chance to clean it yet so this was how i picked it up taken at Goodwood last week. Whislt i'm still forking out the national debt in nursery fees i needed a cheap bit of fun that i can tick off my "cars to own" list, typically for us i briefly mentioned it to the wife on friday night and by saturday evening i had a 91 J plate Golf GTI sitting on the drive that we paid the tidy sum of £800 for, although it's definately a keeper and i'll restore it in it's original spec/condition. For a 20 year old car it's pretty cool, few usual bits of corrosion in the usual places but i'm looking forward to tinkering in the best way i know and love. I'll look to keep this post as a rolling diary of the stuff done. Couldn't believe how tight it drives for not only a 20 year old car but one that's done 143k. So far i've already had the air box and afm out, spent 10 hours sanding the afm so it's now nice and shiney and ready to go back in, i've begun cleaning the left side of the engine bay and i'll repaint it as there's a little rust that needs brightening up, so far i've stripped sanded and treated the left hand side which is now ready for paint. The plastic cowlings are all out and soaking in autoglym so the plastics are coming back nicely and the washer bottle that was black with crud inside has also had a couple of hours cleaning and back like new, i'm really enjoying this little project. The long term plans will be to to source a rebuilt 8v engine with some subtle power increasesas as i don'twant to change the originality and in a couple of years i'll strip the car down and have it re-painted in Alpine white, good times ahead.
If anyone knows a MK2 guru in the Chichester area in would be great as i'm sure i'll need some advice along the way as i take it all apart.
Hope you like the pictures and i'll keep you all updated as i go along.

£800?! Bargain!! Looks like you've got yourself a very tidy motor there!
Looking forward to seeing you clean it up (although it doesn't look like it needs much!)
More importantly though, enjoy it
-
That is very tidy!
Possibly vauxhall bbs's?
Early Gti badge too. Needs the late one.
-
I thought the BBS wheels were the original ftiment for the 8v GTI?
Which badge is wrong as they need replacing anyway so better to get the right one :)

I was just wondering what was different with the wheels
Sure I have seen the same on Cav's and Nova's
EDIT - Nice golf by the way
-
Think your right weren't they used on Nova/Astra Diamonds - now i sound like an complete anorak, must get out more, no wait i'll just clean the Golf :)
-
Nice motor, chop the wheels in for the original BBS ones and that will look spot on.
-
My brothers Nova Luxe had wheels just like that...
oh and FAP FAPPETY FAP-FAP-FAP! thats one tidy, original looking car :afro:
-
Oh yes and she's going to stay original too, definately need to look into the wheels though, sussed the front badge is from a mk1 GTI so i can sort that but you got me on the wheels, time for a google search, all the ones i keep seeing seem to have the same wheels though :)
-
Very nice.

Yeah the grille badge looks like it is from a mk1 but I don't think it looks out of place. Your wheels do look very similar to the BBS RA which should of come with the golf although the spokes are a bit different I think. I wouldn't worry about it unless it is now bothering you after reading this
-
I was going to send them off to get re-furbed but not sure if there the wrong ones, what size were the originals 15" ?
Anyone got any RA's they dont want :)
-
Nice bargain!
Yeah replacing the vauxhall wheels shouldnt be hard, if you're after BBS RA's they come up quite often. you might get a few quid for your wheels on the right site???
-
Just had a look at the wheels and your spot on, they've got GM stamped on them, dislike Vauxhalls at the best of times so they get off my dub.
Thanks for saving me the cost of getting the wrong wheels redone lol, it'll give me some time to sort a nice set though.

RA's with 195 50 profile tyre would look spot onat that height.
I dont think thats a mk1 badge. More like a very early mk2 gti one. The mk1 badge doesnt clip into the mk2 grille. Thats what I found anyway
Come to the shows. Ive bagged RA's at bargain prices
-
Tidy that

Hi,
The rest of the ongoing work to my Golf is in the Dub Projects section but i wanted some advice and opinions on the following.
I've repainted the rear panel to remove some corrosion and give the car a general tidy up.
The rear "Golf GTI" was looking pretty crap and after phoning around can't seem to get a new one so rather than it looking tarnished i've sanded off the remaining "chrom, used sparingly" and given it a black finish.
The question is does the rear VW badge look odd being shiney chrome or should i paint it black to match?
I've already painted the front badge black.

Thanks in advance
Jeremy.
I will in time and when i can source them get original OE chrome but for now i'm trying to make it look as tidy as possible.
-
Looks fine but then if it bothers you, get a spare rear thats not so shiney and to it to match the rest... all black badges on a white GTI seems good to me?
-
my opinion mate, as you wanted it :D ;), is chrome on white... not nice, just think there is no contrast, yes i know im anal!!
i would go for a satin black for them so they are similar in contrast to the bumper blacks, which would compliment them nicely as you bought the big bumper version!
but its looking fapping awesome i must say, alpine white mk2s are the sexiest ones :D
some deep dish alloys, with white centres and wide would set it off too, but thats just me schemeing on somebody elses car :D
-
Must admit i'm really tempted to get some Corrado wheels, think their called Sebring and paint them white.
Might have a look about
-
sure ya dont mean sebrings, the kinda square pepper pots, oo, lol.
the others that are like merc wheels are nice!
had them on my rado!
id love to whack some borbet a's on that with white centres!
hows aout some white brocks?? know where there will be some pristine ones for sale soon!
-
What are "brock" wheels?
-
welcome to the club, nice motor.
-
Look for andyh corrado on dubrides below yours, his White ones, they are heels made by brock! :)

This one, forgot they are cream now?!
-
Not so keen on those, rather stick to a white set of Sebring wheels.
-
Just read through your project page - nice work!
-
In the end i decided to go all black, the decision made itself as i thought i'd try to clean the front GTI badge and the chrome just starting wiping off so black it went, think it would definately suit some gunmetal Sebrings now

Only slight issue is that after the heavy rain last night the car turns over but won't start
-
Badges look really good in black, nice job.
-
Cheers Phil,
I've got the car running with some WD40 in the dizzy cap so now much happier, another save from a forum post and reminds why you lot are such a nice bunch of peeps.
-
well done on both counts m8!!
looks much better now!
wd40 saves lives :D
