do All 8v gti's have an 020 box ? if i get one without knowing the code is there a slight chance i may end up with the wrong one ?

yes unless automatic.  020 refers to the type of gearbox, there is another code which refers to the gear ratios inside

oem 8v GTI box codes are ACD and AUG, earlier GTIs had 9A code iirc
