Title: cam cover gasket
Post by: spear on 17 August 2010, 15:23
I'm planning to change the cam cover gasket on my 16v this weekend and wondered if someone could tell me if i should replace any of the bolts whilst I'm doing it? I was going to get some spares in case I destroy any during removal but which bolts do i need?

also read about some gasket seal that some people apply on the corners, is this necessary or am i ok without it?

thanks ina dvance for your suggestions, want to do it right first time!!

you need just a smidgeon of sealnt in the corners of the humps over the cam sprocket and dizzy ideally otherwise it will leak a bit. cant remember the type off hand but it comes up on ebay from time to time, same stuff as used on the later models for the sump.  most abfs use hex nuts on the rocker cover, so check which you have before you start. upper half of inlet manifold needs to come off but the allen bolts for this should be ok as they're easily accessible

make sure you get the right gasket as well, there's two types

early ABF's (I think and maybe Seat ABF's) use the same rocker cover/gasket as the 16v KR from a mkII, which has a raised section all the way round the gasket which sits inside a groove on the rocker cover

later ABF's use a flat gasket and no groove on the rocker cover

I found this out the annoying way :(

As stated make sure you get the correct gasket, early ones are differant.

You will also need the gasket for the top half of the inlet which needs to be removed. I would only replace the bolts if they are knackered.

early cover = bolt fixing, late cover = nuts :)
