Hi all, well I love my retro cars and when a 1992 1.8 CL came up in good condition I had to have it.
Problem is that after a week im having problems starting it. It starts fine first thing in the morning when cold but if you turn it off the try to restart it you have to turn it over alot and it doesnt fire up but more splutter.
If I take my foot off the throttle when its spluttering it will cut out, if I keep my foot planted and drive off its ok???
Also when it splutters it throws out smoke too
When moving the engine is smooth and powerfull, hopefully this is a common problems that you experts have encountered.
Any help or advice please
Thanks

Sounds like cr@p in the carb.
Get the carb off and clean it up carefully.

the throttle body???

If it's injection then yes.
The age of the car means it could be Golf2 or Golf3. Which is it?

I think all the 1.8's were fuel injected at this time.
It could be one of the sensors that controls idle speed/mixture (idle control valve?), which wouldn't be used by the ecu on a cold start or when under load and driving.
Hope this helps you to track down the offending sensor/part................
