Title: A couple of MK2 Golf problems
Post by: BiGUKG on 13 August 2010, 08:46
Right, it's a 1.3 MK2 and there are a couple of things I'd like some advice about if poss!

1) It really doesn't seem eager to start a lot of the time. Sometimes it's fine sometimes it just cuts out as soon as I stop turning the key to the "start" position.... so I now have to give it some revs when I start it up. I'd be enclined to say there's something wrong with fuel delivery except I'm almost definitely way off there since it's fine there after, runs spot on otherwise!

2) Took the car up the garage last night to check pressures, now I don't know what they're supposed to be but I've put them all on 28 at the moment. The front tyres had 35 PSI and the rears 22 and 21. What should I be putting in them?

3) The thrust bearing has gone too, so it makes a horrible grinding noise sometimes. With pay day a couple of weeks away I'm thinking about putting it in the garage one weekend to get it sorted out. Would you recommend just getting a new clutch on it? Or will they be OK just changing the thrust bearing? I'm thinking with a 20yr old car I might as well just get the lot replaced if I can afford to.........

These are all things that worry me slightly, I'm worried it's just going to decide it doesn't want to start one day, I know the thrust bearing probably won't totally go/do any further harm but I can't bear the noise any more!!!

Cheers,
Alex

Found the tyres pressures OK (ish) but not much that's of help on thrust bearings and the starting problem... so still need advice here if anyone has had similar problems.

As for clutch, if you can afford it, replace it, as otherwise you will pay much the same price again to get the clutch done at a later point.

also check ignition switch on the column if its intermittant start problem give the key a waggle as your turning it to start, had this on a mk1 that had good fueling and good spark

Just looking at the key, it does look like it's got a bit of a twist in it, so that won't do it any good. Perhaps I'll try putting the key in different ways, to see if one way round it makes any difference? Got a spare key so could try that too if it's gonna make any difference.

cheers for that, I'll have a look at lunch time (1pm)
