As per title, after being on holiday and not driving for a week I noticed a couple of things that I hadn't noticed when driving it daily.
Firstly when travelling at any speed over about 85mph the car begins to feel a bit unsettled and the steering slightly lighter. Coilovers have been on a for a few weeks and have bedded in, I fitted new top mounts all round when changing suspension and tracking/camber is spot on. What else could cause this?
Secondly, how much should the engine block move when pushed by hand (if at all!)?
Finally I think I caught a couple of lorry drivers sleeping when flying up the M6 the other night and got cut up a couple of times, had to hit the brakes fairly hard and got some severe steering wheel wobble and a little bit of pulling to the left. Is this likely to be a warped disc(s)??
Cheers

about the brakes think they warped ive got same prob!! only fitted mine nearly 2 yrs ago aswell! ragged of bad! engine not ment to move much as i have an 8v agg engine code

Steering will always feel lighter at higher speeds, check all of the bushes and ball joints front and back, and replace the ones that have play
Engine mounts should only let the engine move a little
Pulling to the left and steering wheel shaking also link to checking the bushes and ball joints.
But the shaking might be the disks

+1 for checking your bushes. We were trying to find a clunking on a mates bora and it was only when someone drove it and slammed the brakes on that we noticed the movement in the wheel - it was moving forward and back in the arch.

Yep :afro:

Condition of bushes and such can certainly give wheel wobble, although I've never had it on the Golf as yet. Are you running anything trick in the way of tyres? Both my father and I switched to track day type tyres (Avon CR6ZZ on a Sunbeam Tiger and Yok 032R on a Mini respectively) and we both hit wheel vibration problems that were only solved by full rebushing of the front suspensions. The Mini in particular really suffered under braking. Disc warping is also a possiblity. Have you tried sticking a DTI against the disc to check this?

Cheers for the replies guys :afro:
Re: bushes/ball joints - no play
Re: Engine movement - I can rock it backwards and forwards about an inch fairly easily, would that be classed as normal?
Re: Discs - i'll check them all over the weekend when I have a bit more time

Tyres are nothing special 195/45/15 Uniroyal Rainsports, only a few weeks old, so i'd be suprised if they were the cause.

Engine movement does sound a bit excessive. Quick scout around the engine mounts might be in order. I had to have mine replaced a little while back. Might be particularly necessary if you've had any oil leaks as the oil will rot the rubber in the mounts.

Yeah it feels like more movement than there should be!
Stupid question but how many mounts are there and where abouts can I find them?
-
Three. One at the front, one under the gearbox, and the difficult to get at one at the rear on the left.

Right then, theres a bit of play in the front mount, from what I can see the other 2 look solid. I'm guessing there should be no play at all in these??
