Title: Is somebody extracting the wee wee here?!
Post by: Stirring Moose on 10 August 2010, 21:47
Right, sit rep. I've got a Mk.3 16v, 5 door shell, 1995 with, until very recently, no mods at all. I am 30 years old, employed, car stored off public road but not garaged. I pay near as damn it £400 for insurance. In last few days, car went in for some pre-MOT TLC and the springs and dampers were pronounced firmly dead. 'Twas decided to fit something a touch more adventurous than standard in their place but still very mild; 20mm drop, few percent stiffer and actually a few quid less than original 'Dub parts. Told insurers and they decided to whack me with a £225 increase in my premium; over 50%!! Seems to me like a colossal act of daylight robbery, I'm damn near buying the suspension twice!

Anyone got any thoughts on this?

Right, problem sorted. Car now on a classic policy with Footman James. £411, 6000 mile limit. Been trying to get Golf with F.J. for a while as they already look after my Mini and are really helpful people to deal with. Unfortunately they weren't very competitive for the 'Dub before, but now it's old enough for classic status, they've got things well sorted.

P.s. Tried to get a quote from HIC but they were really hard to get hold of and when I finally got through there was no one available who could do a quote. They then said they would call me back and didn't. I know you do good things for the forum guys but this isn't how to run a business.
