Title: Clock Swaps
Post by: Judderi on 12 January 2005, 14:18
I need to sort the lights out on my clocks and would really like to install these dials.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=72215&item=7947295834&rd=1

The only trouble is mine is a 16v 89 with 160mph clocks. What exaclty would i need to do to swap to 140mph clocks?

to make your clocks work on the 140mph scale you need to change the speedo drive on the gearbox end of the cable

at the mo your's uses the red speedo drive, u need the white one. i have one if you want it

its just a clip off clip on affair

i looked at these lights too, the only thing i wasn't sure about was how you'd illuminate the needle as these don't allow you to have the bulbs shining on the display, so at night it could be a bit of guess work judging your speed. any thoughts?

although the faces now glow do the original dash lights still not work also??

I was going to try leaving the origional clock bulbs going and see what it looked like or try painting the needles white or orange and installing a black light.

Gambit are you sure mine are the one plug clocks? Arnt pre 90's 2 plugs?

Hazard on dash means the clocks are the two plug type!

Best way to do it is when you get the replacement clocks, simply swap your old speedo into the new set.  That way you keep your milage, dead easy just make sure you keep the correct 'L' shaped circuit board and bit that screws into the rear of the clocks with the right set of clocks

well the way i looked at it was that the new gauges used the original bulb holders for the feed for the led's so i assumed you couldn't use both? i may be wrong but thats kind of how it seems.

Not sure where they get their power from. Im kinda expecting that i will need to get the old soldering iron out and take a feed from the headlight switch.

Hmm i may have spotted a problem. In the picture for the dials i noticed that the bottom mileage counter is off set to the right where my 160mph clocks are dead centre.

It looks like they are off set on the 140mph clocks

But can you get the 140mph clocks with 2 plug's ? :undecided: ? :undecided: ? :undecided:

hi. I was looking at  these on ebay and came looking for someone with them fitted, anyone got some pics ?  looking at the ebay ad it say's -

" ****  VERY IMPORTANT:  You DO NOT need to remove Gauge Dial Needles at anytime when installing.  Removing needles will cause your instrument cluster to malfunction."

How is this possible ? do they come in 2 halfs?
and also if they fit onto exsiting dails how can there be room behind for the electrical connector that looks to be at the back of each dial, they wouldn't sit flush?!?.
They work off AC current rather than DC from the car so thats why the inverter is used so the 12V DC coulb be taken off the headlight switch.
How is the brightness controlled ? in built dimmer or wiredto the one above the headlight switch ? ( my dimmer doesn't seem to work)

If anyone has these pics and a post would be cool

I think your supposed to slide the needle of your dials through the centre hole which does look big enough, then push down into place. The wire connectors are on the very edge so would not be seen i hope. As for the brightness if your dimmer worked this would controll it as long as thats where you take the power feed from.

Dead easy to sort mate:
1. Take the clocks out and remove the bulbs, then remove all 8 bolts/screws on the back
2. You should be able to open the clocks, carefully hinging them at the bottom where the PCB goes into the clocks
3. Lift the speedo needle over the stop and make a note where it stops
4. Take the needle off, easiest way is to place 2 blunt table knives either side and twist them
5. undo the 2 screws holding the dial face on, be carefull with these its easy to damage the face of em
6. take the speedo face off and turn it over, you should see the holes for the lower milage
7. Cut the holes out with a very sharp knife
8. Reassemble

Hi guys,

I'm running an 89 8v GTi and it has the 120mph clocks. From reading this post I think that it maybe possible to change my faces for 160mph or 140mph and change the speedo cable so they read right. Is this correct?

I want to change them as (On private property) I wound the old girl up and she went off the clock!

From what I've heard the 160mph uses the same drive as the 120 clocks, and the 140 has a different speedo gear.

There is a number printed on the face of the speedo somewhere, if this matches your speedo then the gear is the same
