Title: SERIOUSLY WORRIED!! advice please
Post by: wrobstar21 on 08 August 2010, 22:43
Hi everyone,

about an hour ago my 16v started making a knocking type noise from around the top to top left hand side of the engine. Checked oil and seems ok, maybe a bit low.

The noise increases with revs and sounds almost like a diesel engine now. someone said to me it could be just a pulley bearing or something.

Anyone experienced this or know what it could be??

Is it down on power? If it is the top end. Possibles could be dropped valve, snapped a cam shaft. Maybe a failed hydrolic lifter? Fair amount of possible causes but doesnt sound good and wouldnt run it incase of causing more damage.

Knocking I would say suggests a bearing problem

Their on the top of your shocks, i found at different speeds & when i let off the gas it stopped knocking sometimes, and when turning. Replaced these and was fine untill i smashed them again

Could be a oil pressure issue, warm it up and see if it knocks again.

My cars turning out to be a right pain in the arse, seems all the noises happen when shes warmed up.

If it were an oil pressure issue wouldn't my pressure light come on? it illuminates when the ignition comes on like it should then goes out!

It should do, see if you can get the oil pressure tested.

yeah, no pressure light at all and oil seems to be flowing to the top of the engine.

Just seems weird to have come on all of a sudden then gone this mornin. Could it be a sticky lifter u reckon. might just change the oil and use some engine flush or treatment. maybe shift or unblock some gunk!

A oil change wont do any harm. Amazing how much better a engine will run after a oil change. When was the last time you changed it? A sticky lifter will make a right racket. Flush, oil & filter and taking it from there.

Only had her a month so not done the service yet but will do asap. gonna flush it out too, maybe clean her insides up!

The thing is.... Took your advice and listened to the engine through a screwdriver and around the valve gear it sounded lovely so it wasn't that.

Took it to bits earlier after work and found out that the bloody tensioner wheel thing which tensions the ribbed belt is wobbling like hell! its tapping against the block and making my horrible noise!!

so hopefully its gonna cost me virtually nothin to fix!

i am once again a happy 16v owner

Thanks to everyone who helped, appreciate it!!
