I found the mk1 and mk2 to be good in winter/snow month when used with correct type tyres. The narrow size and cars size/weight prob helps.
Hows the mk3 in winter?
-
managed in the snow no probs earlier this year, lot of it's down to the drivers though
-
did winter in my dropped on its ass gti along with the porker rims and stretched rubber
it handled it very well, and doubled up as a handy snow plow

this pic was from the last batch of snow and a 20 mile drive home, was a bit scary on my street as its steep as fook and very narrow with nobheads parked on the street!

Had one mahoosive tank slapper in the snow last year when I plain and simple got caught out by the conditions, that actually properly frightened me. Also had a stupid 5mph straight on job on some sheet ice but otherwise can't say there have been any real big issues.
S.M.

same as above broke my splitter at 5mph sliding into the curb last winter but other than that its really good!!

On the correct tyres, perfect.
I've used 195/50/15s & 195/45/16 and never got stuck.
-
Same as any other car, if driven properly
I was running 17's during winter with no probs. If you don't act like a ricer, you won't skid anywhere.
-
fine but door handles kept freezing up LOL! hopefully fixed for this year!

Sorry to hijack the thread, but how did you go about sorting that out? I had similar issues last winter.
Anyone have any tips on how to stop the door rubbers sticking too?

I was starting work at 7am so leaving at 6.30, and at that time it was pretty cold and frozen up. I just boiled the kettle before leaving and poured a bit over the handles :)

+1 dont even need to put boiling water, just warm tap water does the job and won't crack/damage anything.
-
cold water was enough to sort mine haha, since got some of that VW lock de icer never froze up again after i used that once
-
Later Mk3's from M/N onwards have strengthened Bows for breaking and clearing ice.
-
upgraded my bows to polly items matey
-
Here is mine last year, as you can see i had no real problems! :smug:

Not had any winter problems with my car, thats 7 years now!
-
with the handbrake i'd say fun, handled good in the snow, it's just the idiots in there 4x4's who think they're invincible until they stack it into a lamp post
-
I done 60mile commutes when it tipped with snow, biggest problem was being so low, but other than that it was fine.
-
Handled just fine, but was rolling on standard at the beginning of this year!
Back end steps out nicely in the car parks though ;)
-
I had a right 'mare last year in mine. I had 2 fights with 2 kerbs and lost twice (badly) in the space of about 10 days! Both massive understeer related incidents at about 5-10mph.
I think it's a wheel/tyre thing though. Once I put the standard alloys back on the front it handled way better.

Hi, what are these bows in the door locks people are talking about and kells changing his, cheers
-
mine was pants in the snow. Could be the tyres though

it was a joke by Bush haha in ref to boats...
As for the door locks, nothing changed, but if you use the VW de icer is sorts it out, i used it once to de ice the locks then they never iced up again, it has some sort of oil in the de icer that must last quite a while once you have used it

Thank you everyone for the replies. Hum a mk3 GTI for the winter is looking interesting.

Im old enough to remember driving in proper winter conditions(we have them up north  ) unlike alot of people i do actually know how to drive in a bad winter (as its a skill i learnt over many years of bad winters) but not every car is equal imo there is big differences from experience even when used with the correct tyres.
