Title: I am seriously in love!

Check out those little honies! 15" Le Castellets and they rock my boat big time. I want four and I want them now

I know I'm keeping the car standard, but you can harldy blame me swapping 14" Castellets with 15" Castellets, as long as they look the same. And these little puppies look the same and look amazing!

i've noticed the guy with the mk3 actually has the wrong tyres on. he has 45 profile, and i'm pretty sure they should be 55. the 16v does enough revs at 100, doesn't need to do anymore with tyres that are too small.

so, where do you live, exactly? and how many bricks are needed to hold a car up? ;-)

Next to the dobermans and the man who never sleeps and has a Uzi 9mm

I've got 55 profile on mine matey. I'll tell you who normally has Rivage stuff for sale on here, there's a user called Alps but I haven't seen him on for a while, he may well have some of these wheels for sale, you never know, might be worth a try with a PM or an e-mail.

f&i generally have estorils, which look the same but with bigger cut outs, and only 5 spokes. often confused.

i always thought rivages as standard had 14" castellets though.

15"s tinman, tyres on mine are 195,55,15 I think, not sure about the 195 bit but they are deffo 55 15s. I'm hoping to refurb and polish mine up when I get the cash and time as I know what blue is saying, they look the dogs danglies when they are polished to the max. You know you want some !

just got back from the VAG Counter and they stopped making them 2.5 years ago.

so it looks like i'll be hunting around a for a rivage to buy, and nabbing the wheels off it. expensive way to acquire wheels though

I'm surprised at that tbh, thought it would have been more like 14 years. All is not lost then, they are out there just a b1tch to find (without the car attached to them).
Title: Re: I am seriously in love!
Post by: tinman on 12 January 2005, 15:59
i've found a rivage on Autotrader for 2k. seriously thinking about seeing it, buying it, getting some wheels and selling it on again.

i've had a uk vw search done and no one has any spare ones on a shelf.
Title: Re: I am seriously in love!
Post by: gibby on 13 January 2005, 10:00
You really want them alloys dont you tinman !?

Bear in mind that you need to sell the Rivage to someone who doesn't know too much about them, personally I wouldn't buy it without the original alloys but you could buy that one for 2k, slap some wheels on it and some race boy might buy it off you for 2.5k? :undecided: 2k for a Rivage is very very cheap.?

EDIT: Just looked on autotrader, that one for 2k doesn't have a pic so you need to check what wheels it has on it first.  :undecided:
Title: Re: I am seriously in love!
Post by: tinman on 13 January 2005, 11:17
i saw that. i was gonna slap on my spare set of 14" Castellets if i go down that route.

a friend was also musing about taking the ?2k rivage off my hands after i got the wheels anyway. free wheels but 100% hassle factor.

at the moment, i have a friend buying a rocco2 tomorrow for s2n with castellets, probably 14s but you never know. and there are two on ebay at the moment.

i quite like the ebay ones as it doesn't mean a hole in the bank account straight away. i can send them down to southampton for refurbing and also to remove the mirror bling finish. my next problem is getting hold of some very specific BFs. its not the money thats the issue, just finding them in the country with the correct tread pattern.

i could however, buy them in florida next month and bring them back with me ;-) probably the cheapest thing to do. not sure what the airline would say though.
Title: Re: I am seriously in love!
Post by: gibby on 13 January 2005, 11:35
Selling the car for same price bought but pinching the alloys sounds like a good idea. On ebay I can only find the sale where there are only two wheels.  :undecided: Even with 14" castellets on it, 2k is cheap though.
Title: Re: I am seriously in love!
Post by: tinman on 13 January 2005, 11:42
yeah, thats the two that i'll probably acquire first.

this is how it goes:

if i didnt purchase these two (assuming i win), then someone in two weeks will put two more on ebay.

if i do purchase it, 2 people will be selling full sets within 2 weeks.

so, i don't think i can win. plus, with a spare wheel (or two), i could (under some very bad circumstances) take a hit and still have a spare wheel to fall back on. these things will only become more rare as time goes on.

Title: Re: I am seriously in love!
Post by: gibby on 13 January 2005, 11:56
Sounds like a plan  You could always sell two on ebay yourself as they will only get rarer that's true. If you do get them and to see if they are originals they should have volkswagen stamped on the wheel and it should also have the word "forged" stamped on them too, there maybe other stamps on there that I can't remember but I could find out if you wanted to know for sure  :undecided:
Title: Re: I am seriously in love!
Post by: tinman on 13 January 2005, 12:07
yeah, there should one more german word. i'll check it against the 14s.

what i would like to know is the measurement from rim to rim across the face of the wheel.

the 14" comes out at 15".

the ones on ebay don't have tyres so there will be a quick tape measure coming out to check that they are correct. its very difficult to actually tell how big a wheel really is when your up close and personal and the tyre is missing.

Tinman, I measured my wheels last night from the tyre end of the rim to the opposite tyre end of the rim and it showed about 16" - 16.5" (it was dark),

Title: Re: I am seriously in love!

you can see them on gibby's pics.

i have a feeling that he has 195/50 which leaves the diameter of the wheel a bit small. the contis on the wheels i'll pick up tomorrow night have the same issue, which is why the wheels i'm getting are 205/50s. They add about 1" on the diameter and make the wheel close to the original diameter from a 185/60. (the 205s will be just a tad bigger).

i'm kinda assuming that later golfs wore 195s without an issue and so the extra width won't be an issure.

i do have a couple of small problems now.

do i put the new wheels on now knowing that they aren't the final item (eg they are polished yet they need to be made dull again, and they are wearing a totally incorrect tyre.)

i think i'll send them down to Southampton in a week or so for refurbing and wait for the US tyres to arrive before giving 1906 a present.

....and here they are - http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/gallery/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=17640&pos=0

Tin, I'm running mine on 185, 55, 15s by the way.
Title: Re: I am seriously in love!
Post by: tinman on 31 January 2005, 12:23
i'm definitely going bigger than 185/55. this car needs something more substancial for cornering. after driving a mid engined car i never knew how poor cornering was on a 16v*. 185/55 is quite a small combination and would have a severe effect on its top speed and its ability (not to mention fuel economy) when travelling in excess of 100 kleptons per sector.

* heavan knows how the 8v owners cope. reckon they must be supplied with a sick bag.

Continuation of story:

15" Castellets were sourced (thx to this forum), cost ?300, and were all polished. Someone had spent hours on them. So they are currently being refurbed and made standard again. Costs incurred so far - ?300 for wheels, ?250 for refurb, ?100 in petrol.

Today, I finally got hold of the tyres. These puppies are not off the shelf. They are special order only, and only available in the US - which is where I am right now.

Anyway, they came into the Tire place today - and $130 per tyre later - i have these tyres - and they look even better in the flesh.

All thats left to do is put them on checked baggage on the flight home! And the airline has said "no problem"!

Title: Re: I am seriously in love!

Right, wheels are done.

Apparently, the refurb people are gutted. some b'stard sent 4 polished 15" Castellets to have them returned to their standard dull finish. that b'stard is ME!! They were so gutted, they nearly even offered to buy them off me. Aaawwww, sweet.

Anyway, just to turn their gutted'ness to anger, they then discovered that the wheels were anodized as well. So the end result is - someone spent alot of time and money making them all polished, and I've spent alot of money turning them back to the original finish.

They are collected tomorrow, and I have no reason to believe that they wont look superb.

The difference being, you wont be able to see your face in them.

Collecting them on Friday and having new tyres put on then. 1906 will be wearing it new shoes on Saturday. Shall post pictures.

the problem i see with polishing them is that it is a fashion and as with all fashions, they pass.

1906 is staying with me, it'll never be sold or passed on, so i dont want the car to become a contemporary statement of fashion.

i know what your saying but le castelletts were always diamond cut (or that look anyway) from the factory so its not like your doing a fashion thing but keeping them as they were made. and surely how they look was what attracted them to you in the first place? !!

castellets never had a polished finish - they always had a dull look to them. the teardrops were always polished though.

the key for the final colour and finish is a set of new centre caps from VAG. apparently they were the last ones left in the UK 2 years ago and I could only get hold of three. however, rather than screw up 3 new centre caps, 4 older unmarked centre caps are being given an identical finish to the wheels just to ensure that continuiuty.

don't get me wrong, no one will ever notice my car, but when they do notice it they will be nicely suprised.
Title: Re: I am seriously in love!
Post by: ...joe on 15 March 2005, 19:20
oh right, i thought they had the same finish as the teardrops because the two sets i have had in the past were both nice and shiny, just like teardrops. and i thought gibbys were that shiney finish as well. you know the sort of finish i mean? it looks like its been cut as there is a slight groove running across the surface?
Title: Re: I am seriously in love!
Post by: tinman on 15 March 2005, 19:46
i know the finish you mean.

the finish on teardrops i think has a laquer finish as well which cracks off with age. very sad because the vast majority of them are not looked after. i cant remember the last good/refurb teardrop i've seen. (doesn't mean there arent any though).

castellets didn't have much of a finish, hence their dull alloy look. i think the reason that Castellets are always polished now is because you can. most alloy wheels are painted or laquered. Castellets don't have much on them so its much easier to polish them up. one problem is that because they have no real protection they get pitted really really badly if they arent washed regulary.
Title: Re: I am seriously in love!
Post by: ...joe on 15 March 2005, 21:04
i'm with you. the last set i had were mint and i would have kept them but they wouldn't fit over my brakes. if i'd had the money i'd have bought the ones i told you about!! ha ha ha !!

Right, all done and dusted.

Total bill for my petulance was somewhere north of a grand.

The new tyres are working well, they dont screech, the car changes direction at the drop of a hat, and maybe its me, but despite going from 185 to 205 you dont feel it. until you stop. if anything, whilst moving the car is actually easier to drive. very odd.

Heres the money shot:
