Title: removing a rounded splined bolt
Post by: Mikee_D on 08 August 2010, 20:38

Im currently removing the engine and gearbox of my MK2 GTI, and I have got down to the last few bolts to remove the last few bolts from the inner CV joint, so i could lift the engine out, and have found that the previous owner has completely rounded the splines on 2 of the bolt heads (on the drivers side).

Is there any other way of removing them or is it a case of cutting the heads off, removing the joint and then removing what's left of the bolt afterwards?

thanks

Try irwin extractors. You can get them from ebay.

you can often just welt a bihex socket over the top and that'll shift it

Cut it off, it saves so much time, and the cost of a replacement is negligible...
Good Luck.

Can't remember whether it's hex key or Torx, but welt one of those in there and they'll generally grip.
