Title: MDI, iPhone/iPod & Gapless Audio
Post by: MarcGTD on 03 August 2010, 14:43
I've been googling on this subject for a wee while now and I've seen some contradicting replies so I wondered if anyone here might be able to give a definitive answer on the subject.

Basically, I have a GTD on order with the RNS 510 and MDI.  I plan to either connect my iPhone to this or failing that, buy a iPod nano and keep it permanently connected and I am wondering if this setup will support gapless playback.   I know the iDevices support gapless audio on their own (as does iTunes) but I was of the understanding that music played through the MDI isn't streamed as audio but transferred as files so it would be down to the car audio system to play the music with or without gaps. On a similar vein, from reading various articles and forums, I am of the understanding that the RNS 510 won't play tracks without gaps when reading from the HDD, SD card or a USB flash drive..  so I'm a bit confused.

Could anyone clear this up for me please?

TIA, Marc

You get annoying gaps between tracks. Well, I do anyway - USB stick.
Even on mixed albums, when you rip them, where Media Player separates the tracks in the titling, you get a brief break in sound.

No issue on a normal album, but annoying on a live album or mixes album.

If it bothers you that much, I suppose an iPod left in place is the answer.

I have an iPod that I just leave in the car and I still get gaps in tracks.

I also get a delay of maybe a second or two when I try to move forward to the next track, is this normal?

Great to hear there will be another GTD on the road.

Just saw this on another forum....worth a try for the ipod gap\stutter problem....

"Hope this helps some of the other folks out there.
My ipod skips about 1 second into the beginning of every song on my 2010 GTI with Dynaudio.
Been to dealer and Apple store many times and nobody could figure it out.
Yesterday, I found the fix by accident.

The problem is in itunes; not your VW.
Go to itunes.
Then go to "preferences"
Go to the "Playback" tab.
If you see your crossfader has a check mark, that may be the problem. Turn it off (disable crossfader).
Now, the bad news:
You have to take every song off your ipod and replace them all with the crossfader disabled.
No more skipping!"

I'll let you know. I've gone and bought an iPod of eBay, as the thought of connecting my iPhone every time I get in and out of the car does not fill me with joy. Also, an 80 Gb iPod (can be a few generations old) is only £80 and has three times the capacity of the iPhone!

I've used USB since day 1 and don't get the issue you have talked about, I don't use Itunes unless its for the Touch, this is for holidays only.

Thanks for that. I'll give it a go as every ipod I have tried, have all suffered from it to a certain extent.

Already tried it. Same problem of the 'stutter' at the start of tracks.
I tried various iPods and various formats. Formatted the iPods (several times), upgraded s/w etc etc.

No joy.

Sony Walkman has worked perfectly for over a year now. (MP3 VBR)

What's the Walkman like for navigating around music etc in the car? I'd love to find an alternative to the i-pod, I only tend to have it because accessories are so ubiquitous for it.

Navigation is similar to the iPod.

Music, artist, album etc. Mix works best if you have a single song/file in the root directory (not inside any folder).

I spent many, many hours trying to get the iPod to work properly, I gave up in the end.

The Walkman has been faultless.

Well I removed the crossfade in iTunes then removed all MP3s from the iPod, resynched it with a fresh set of non-crossfaded songs and so far so good - it now has no stutter!!!

Just for clarity.

I was talking about the iPod 'stutter' issue and not the gaps between tracks.

Removing the crossfade option has remomved the stutter for me - 4 months of frustration but got there !!
