silly question but whats the bulb type for the spotlights on a quad headlight grille?... havent got the old bulbs, are rthey H3 because if they are the connections dont look right.

mine have always been h3 bulbs, though some mk1s have fog lamps in the grille rather than spotlights. pics?

Think thats just the campaign though, could be wrong?

Mines a campaign but have recently rewired the entire car with mostly GLI looms. Connections could be wrong for the lamps???

the plug in your hand is for your side lights :)
and yes, thats a h3 bulb socket. looks like you are missing the loom between the bulb and the car, also there should be a big rubber cap with 2 wires on it that fits to the back of the spotlamp. the car loom then plugs into that.
and yeah the fogs were the factory fit ones, which are quite rare. campaign only afaik? the spot lamps were dealer fit option :)

I may have just stupidly grabbed the wrong connection, there may be another, was a panic shot as i was running late for somewhere!... so are mine spots or fogs?. Yes i am missing the caps for these. Someone stole them! :angry: I also have bosch valance fogs which poke through the kit. not refitted these yet as kit is off and can't find a replacement for a cracked lens. :sad: Its just been so long i cant remember how the lights were setup. Originally it had an upgraded loom for the lot to run Higher wattage bulbs.

they are probably going to be spots, but the way to tell is to check the lense lines. if they're vertical its a spot lamp, if horizontal its a fog in general. think can tell by the e markings on them as well?
also if you light the bulb can tell by the pattern, if its high up then its spot if its very low then its fog

Very interesting to know.... thanks... well there's a good chance i'm missing connections for the H3s so may have to make something up for them. Stupidly i thought i could just walk into halfrauds and grab what i wanted but they dont list the the mk1 very well any more, dont even cover a GTI in their book! Their sytem issued me the wrong bulbs too! n loads been done to the car so must post it all up in the dub rides asap if anyones interested... I'll post the outcome of the lights tonight, cheers!

They look like the spots but most the spot ones ive seen have the little hella badge in the centre. :undecided:
The fogs have a huge amount of lines on the lense.
The fogs were an option but a rare one. Campaigns came with them standard and i have a vague memory maybe the GX did too or maybe not, 1983 was a long time ago for me to remember :grin:

These are hella spots, later version. My first GTI and my 1980 cabby both had the ones you mention with the little blue badge in the middle. the later ones didnt. I dont remember 83 that well either, i think i was 5! :grin:
