They are known for drinking oil (as much as 1 litre per 1500 miles) something to do with the way the engines are run in apparently. The ones driven hard at the start of their life don't drink so much oil. If your mate is using fully synth oil, suggest they switch to semi-synthetic, it's supposed to help a little. Every 2 - 5 days does seem excessive though, most obvious cause would be a leak, can't always rely on looking for drips on the ground.. have a good look around the engine, usually around the rocker gasket.

hi there,
i have a '99 2litre gti as well, mine was drinking huge amounts of oil. and there was no oil leak that i could see and it wasnt blowing any oil or smoke out the back,
one of my mates had a look at it and found that two rocker cover bolts where loose and the oil was vaporising out of the slight gap, the heat and oil vapor also made one of the breather pipes collapse.
my advice would be to take off that stupid plastic cover on the engine and look for any dry oil and check all pipes and make sure your rocker cover bolts have not come loose slightly.
Hope that helps.
