Title: Missfire/Staling 16V!
Post by: 16vmk3ash on 09 January 2005, 23:30
I have had a Missfire/Staling problem with my golf since i have owned it, but recently it has got much worse!

When driving the engine seems to just cut out then restart (the rev counter needle just starts flicking up and down), this used to happen now and again.
Recently though it has been happening daily, but today it cut out completlely and would not restart!
I has someone give me a tow to get it going again but it would not fire up in 2nd gear, only in 1st and i had to rev it hard to stop it from stailing again.

I have noticed a klicking sound from the fuse box when its cutting out.

Does anyone know what the problem is likely to be?

change the fuel pump and ecu relays.

If the engine is just stalling then this wont be the ecu relay.

If the engine is just cutting out without any warning then this is probably the ECU relay.

It is located in postition number 3 on the relay board. (top row, third from left and has a "30" marked on the top.

Always replace this with a genuine VW relay.

mine was doing this before the coil packed up..

the clicking does tend to point at the relays though!

Ive just replaced the coil on mine where it was arking and sounded like it was miss firing i guess because it didnt have enough current to spark as it was arking due to the coil breakdown. Ive replaced the coil in mine but it now wont idle.. its all over the place, And on accelleration its jumpy... any ideas?

Thanks for the help so far but it hasent worked!.

I bought a ECU Relay today from a main dealer and on my way back home my car broke down again. I put the new relay in and it fired up, but my car broke down again about 2min down the road!. I still had my old Fuel Pump relay in the car so tried that and nothing (the engine would fire then cut out straight away).

The klicking from the fuse box seems to be from the fuel pump relay (when i put my hand over the relays and turn the ignition on you can feel it).
You know when you turn the ignition on there is a sound (drivers side rear)! is that the fuel pump presureising?
Just asking because as well as the klicking that sound happens at the same time.

Anyway I had to get my car towed to a VW specialist and am now waiting to see what they find.

had similar problem with mine, but it started as a misfire on runoff and reverse. got gradually worse. finally found, after trying usual suspects that there was a tear in the manifold pressure sensor hose. this hose run from the back of the inlet manifold to the ecu

The buzzing noise is the pump building up pressure in the fuel system ready for starting. normally lasts for about 4 seconds and is normal.

Be interesting to see what the problem is

The garage phoned me today and said they are 90% sure (the fault wasent showing up on there comp, but they had cars with similar probs before) its the Crank Impulse Sensor!
he said the part would cost ?108 plus VAT and fitting. does that sound right?
