Post by: robz on 02 August 2010, 16:14
ok, as i have just posted in the garage section, i wanna take the golf off the road but next year i want to be taking the car to shows etc...
so as i will cancelling my insurance policy thisyear im thinking are there any weekend insurance covers available for what will be a heavily modified golf??
i know that one day policies are around but as i have no experience with them do they pull their nose up at cars like ours??
i wanna keep the car rd worthy and mot'd taxed etc... just havent got the ability to trailor the car around to shows, and would also like few weekend trips out with it...
so if anyone understands what im after your advice would be great :)

Try a Classic Car policy with very limited mileage. That way you can go out whenever you want and it will still be covered at home when you don't use it. I recently had a Classic Car quote on my 95 8valver so it is possible Buddy

yeah, could try that, then at least it would be getting on for £900 a year!
what company do ya use?
its a mk3 also, some people will argue that it isnt classic..?

I went on the Money Supermarket Classic Car Insurance section and put in all my details. My 1995 Mark 3 8v Valued at 800 quid and with nil no claims (as I use it on my other Golf) and the best I got was 398 per annum.

You need a limited mileage policy for modified cars, the 'classic' aspect is not really relevant. Try HIC, Greenlight, Chris Knot - all the usual suspects who know what they are talking about with modified cars :)

its very unlikely you will get short term/weekend cover on a heavily modified car and even if you can its likely to be hugely expensive - as others have suggested a limited mileage policy is probably the best way too go. Most insurers give big discounts for limited mileage. Classic insurance is another option but like you say its a mk3 so not all insurers will consider that a classic....often the car has to be 15years old or more, a 2nd car, on restricted mileage and sometime even a minimum value.....with certain models (and you could argue including the mk3) you could argue the mint low mileage examples as classic BUT on the flip side there are plenty of rough ones about for low money which are just plain "old"

hope that helps
