Title: VR6 Cams
Post by: VR6_Wherry on 02 August 2010, 11:40
Hey Guys,

Basically i'm onto my next mod which will be Cams! but i don't really know anything about them

I'm looking into the supercharge route at some point so i'm after the best cams that will be able to cope with that sort of power? (I will be upgrading engine internals when i get my engine rebuilt, before the charger goes on)

If any one knows anything that would be awesome!

Oh budget is around £400

Might be best to ask Glen (ess-three).

Standard cams may be ok.

You rang?

If it's NA, and road usable, I'd go with no more than 268/268s - Schricks preferably.

For track work, maybe Schrick 276/276s. Only 0.1mm more lift, and a bit more duration...possibly makes for a few more BHP at the very top, at the expense of low down torque.

Personally, I'd opt for 268s, a Schrick VSR manifold and a re-worked corrado 2.9 TB as that combo is epic!

For FI applications you want to limit the duration or you'll blow the charge straight through.
276/276s are out for turbo applications...probably 268/268s too.
They do a set of 264/260s which would probably work - good lift, with only slightly more duration than standard.
Or stick standard cams if turbo-ing.

For supercharging, I'd suggest either standard or 264/260s.
The 268/268s may work...but you don't need the duration with a blower, and the 264/260s have the same lift as the 268/268s but less duration to blow the charge through.

So, my choice would be 264/260...on a Schrick VSR if you can find one. torque tastic!

Ahh...none of which you will get for even remotely close to £400.

See if Cat Cams do and 264/260s or 260/260 or 264/264s...they will be cheaper than the Schricks.

£587.50 I'm happy to pay that much on a set of Schrick Cams. What would happen if i ran 264/260 standard, without the charger?

From what ive read over on vr6oc 263's are your best bet, have a read on that site as there are alot who have super/turbocharged their's and they either seem to run 263's or 268's with very good results.

Try Docherty cams, seem to be cheaper than Shrik.

Also if you cam it and stay N/A then it'll need remapping to get the best from em.

That's what i thought, the only thing will be the induction kit, exhaust and P+P TB. So a remap would be in order to get that sorted.

At the moment it's just research, haven't got the funds to do it yet

264/260 will run just fine...but if you like to rev it - have a light flywheel and/or lower gearing, it'll scream more on 268/268...as well as make a handful more BHP.
Either way, you'll get a gain...but in neither case will it be massive so please don't expect it.

There are lots of cams out there...but Schricks just work.

Personally, I'd pay the bit extra for Schricks because they are a known quantity.
At under £600 for a set, it's not too bad.
