Title: Car died last night had to be recovered
Post by: Das Auto on 01 August 2010, 12:34
As the title says my MK6 GTI died last night. I was driving and noticed that the dsg box was stuck in 2nd gear i couldnt change up or down and the display on the dash didnt recognise it was in gear I pulled up and then there was a horrible churning noise and when i accelerated the car churned asif something was grinding in the gear box untill the point it would not move in neutral or drive !!! horrible experience ??

Any ideas ??

So sorry to hear this but you must never two-time a lover or a car. You young 'turks' are too, too much!
Hope it gets sorted to your satisfaction.

I think yours may have been the first mk6 GTI to die like this.

Sounds like the box could well have shat it's pants. Still it's under warranty so only an inconvenience not a disaster.

I love the way people are surprised when cars break. Modern cars are massively complicated and no amount of testing and quality control can completely eliminate failure. You've just been unlucky but at least it happened in the warranty period. Things like this will write off modern cars when they're over 5 years old for people like me. I could afford a 5 year old DSG GTI but I couldn't afford to repair it if the box died.

I wish your GTI a speedy recovery and remember, it could be worse. You could own a MKIII

total cost for vw 6900 pounds

Holy crap!

There again the DSG is hellishly complex - as well as the two multi-plate clutches, it has its own oil sump, oil pump, cooler and filter. There are fouteen sensors in and around the gearbox, a dozen hydraulic valves controlling oil pressure to the four gear selection actuators and clutch packs, plus inputs from various systems around the car including the traction control and ABS controller, steering controller and engine ECU. And of course a computer to try and make sense of it all.  :nerd:

This is why in 5 years time scrap yards will be littered with MKV and VI DSG GTI's. No one is gonna pay that to fix a £6 - 10K car.

Just out of interest am I in a position to reject the car seeing as though it has had such a major fault at such a young age ?

Totally. I think that also, if a young child about 1 or 2 years old, gets their finger accedentially stuck in a plug hole and blows its head off, you should be given another one from ebay almost immediately as the child wasnt that old.

Nothing like a new box ever so often. Works a treat. Those stick shifter lovers are jealous you can have a FOC box change.
Yours in sincere sympathy,
Manual Muncher

PS: I'm sure it will be fine.

An FOC box that wouldn't be needed if the simplicity of a manual and use of the left arm/leg were employed in the act of changing gear!

DasAuto: Sorry to burst your baloon but unfortunately you don't have a chance in hell for a rejection. But wonders will never cease and there is nothing lost in having a good bash at it.
Hope you get your car repaired to your satisfaction soon and next time buy a manual.
