Hey guys, this is my first post on here.
I've got a mk3 gti 8v with the AGG engine in it. What happened was... traveling home last friday from a long week college, on the M4 the engine just cut out, simple as that! The fuel pump is priming, the cam belt is fine and the engine turns over okay but its just not firing. I have replaced the engine management relay no.30 and fuse 15 on the fuse line. The rotor arm in the distributor looks alright as well as the contacts. Im a little lost as to what it could possibly be, im only 18 so still learning. With this being the "GTI" forum i know you guys will be tricked up on these cars.
Please help a fellow dubber out :).
Thanks, D.72.

coil pack? certainly sounds like something to do with the secondary ignition circuit. is the battery ok?

sorry didnt see the bit about it turning over, wont be the battery or alternator then
did it start again?
-
no mate, the battery was flat after the 2 hours sat at the side of the motorway with the hazards on, and then the 3 hour tow home... but i charger her right up and there is still no change. The engine just cut out, literally! Thats why im thinking more electrical, there was no warning of the engine going die, no smoke, no rattles and no juddering. Can you expand more on the coil pack for me please bud, location and possible faults?? Cheers.

Is there a spark from any of the HT leads?
-
I tried checking that but couldnt run round to the front of the car fast enough , i will check it on the morning before work and let y'all know.
-
Remove the fuel pump fuse. Remove HT number 1, place it against the engine block, turn the engine over.
It will work even better when it's dark
-
As above, worked for me in the past.
-
what do you mean?? lol

what there sayin is pull off the HT that goes from the dizzy to the plugs at the spark plug end one at time (replacing them after each go) and hold it to the engine block so that you can see if theres a spark jumping across the gap between block and plug lead. just remember to remove the fuel pump fuse from the fuse box to disable it. get some one to turn the engine over as you do it. i wouldnt fancy being the one to hold it though lol. if there's no spark then its probably gonna be your coil pack, maybe king lead, or rotor arm as its not likely for every ht lead to fail at the same time. if there is a spark then start thinking about your fuel supply again.
im just going on what i've been told at college though. we normally just crack out the Pico scope for stuff like this!!
was there no other symptoms before it cut out? normally with a defective coil pack it'll run like a bag of spanners!
-
ahh lol yeah i see what you mean , i took the number 4 sparkie out and there was no spark when the engine was turning over. The distributor rotor arm looks all okay as well. so im now thinking pre distributor. What could be wrong with the coil pack? or has it just died?
No there was no sign or symptoms of it about to cut out, it just stopped working haha.

if its the coil pack the only fix is to buy a new one. get em off ebay for under £20
just had a thought, aren't the crankshaft position sensors known to go faulty on mk3's?
-
yeah top 2 suspects here would be coil and crank sensor. crank sensor is burried deep right at the bottom of the engine block next to the gearbox, look behind front engine mount and oil filter. follow the wiring from it, if its the original one it'll be all cracked up with bare wires showing most likely.
much easier to check the spark with an inductive timing light, hooks over the cable to no messing about trying to earth things to the engine if you're on your own. of course this will only tell you if the spark is making its way as far as the plug, it wont tell you if the plug itself is sparking or not.
if it has an aftermarket immobiliser it could be that, the factory one will still allow the car to fire for a second or so when cranking over, and it wouldn't cause the car to cut out randomly either
-
that to me sounds like spark issues... 1st assumption would be the coil pack as mentioned...the best way to check it is to borrow one from a mates car or buy one from a scrap yard. if youre local to southampton ive got 3 coil packs sat around that are all good so you can have one (for nothing or cost of delivery) if it gets your dub back on the road.
-
cheers guys , i've got a friend who's breaking his mk3 so will nab it off that. I think thats going to be the issue so i'vw got my fingers crossed. Thank you all for your help and advice , and thanks to dontknow17 for the offer .

just an update, got her going tonight after changing the coil pack , I need to adjust one of the tappets though because now there is a tapping coming from the engine lol, more trouble....
-
tappets are non adjustable. They are hydraulic and can only be replaced. About 10 quid each I think.

As above non adjustable.
