I bought this 1993 mk 3 GTi with 110000 miles on it --- MOT fail due to someone missing the jacking points at front
now after fitting new cam belt the engine has " lost compression " the garage tell me ( have asked for more info )
if the worst come to the worst I will swop engine it is 2E version
any one had any experience of changing an engine and how big a job it is ?
what engines would it take / could I upgrade at the same time --- clutch up grade ?
any info most appreciated
cheers

Fit the same to be honest.
2e is different to the later AGG lump.

thought that might be the way to be honest
is it a big job ?
and should I do the clutch at the same time when engine is out ?
thanks

since its a 2e, any of the 2.0 8v lumps can be fitted. the difference is the later ones have a crank sensor, which isnt used on the 2E. just dont plug it in! apart from that base block and heads are identical. Just need to swap your old 2E dizzy into the later block, and various bits like inlet etc.
not really a hard job, unbolt engine drag out with crane, swap over whats different and chuck it back the same way. clutch deffo should be done while engine is out, madness not to. get a good quality sachs clutch kit.
however I'd be suspicious that the problem happened right after the timing belt, I wonder if the timing is messed up. dizzy is easy to move when belt is off so might be that
