hi all
just got a 4 motion and want to lower it.any advice welcome as this is my first golf.

Hi mate, opinions vary and people say different things, but if available for your car and money is no object then people will say go for coilovers, if you don't want coilovers then the best setup that most people suggest is Koni shocks with Eibach springs. Hope this helps. :smiley:

Alot depends on how much you want to lower it and what kinda ride you're looking for after.
If you wanna lower it and fit different wheels purely for cosmetics then that can be dealt with in a different way to if you want a lower centre of gravity and a stiffer, sharper ride.
Another thing to bear in mind is who will fit it for you?
If you're looking for cosmetics / wheels the final ride height is ultimately what you want to fine tune - I'd recommend ride height adjustable coil overs so you can fine tune the height to avoid scrubbing etc but give you some level of flexibility.
If it's more to improve the handling the ride height isn't as important and you can get damper adjustable coil overs, again giving you control over how firm the ride is. Or just a plain damper adjustable kit ...
Alot of these fixed kits you can buy have such varying results - it might be to soft or not low enough for your taste - and you'll not know till you've spent the time and money fitting it!
You could go as far as buying a kit that can adjust both - but they're serious money for anything worth having.

(As for the phrase 'coilover' it just mean that the coil or spring is set above the shock - when people refer to coil overs what they actually mean is ride height adjustable coil overs, as this arrangement has to be used to give the adjustment. If you bought a plain and simple coilover setup you wouldn't automatically set this height adjustment)

It's worthwhile upgrading the 4motion's ARB's to those from the R32, stiffens it up nicely at a very reasonable price :cool:

thanks for the replys,was starting to think that i wouldnt be getting any.main thing was the best place to get new springs etc and what works best with the golf.as my previous cars have always been jap gtir gto etc.so i know very little about the golf.

Ash, you could look on the main site www.golfgti.co.uk and search through the links that are on there or just do some searches around the net, then decide what route you want to go and then get some prices off the net and even ask if the prices are reasonable, most people on here have bought bits an bobs and will say if you've found a good deal or not. I found this site the other day, http://www.motorsportworld.co.uk if you go to "Tuning tips" then "suspension" it might give you a few ideas. :smiley:

i may be way off here but am i right that some mk4's need a drop link reposition thing to stop something rubbing on the anti roll bars? i think this is only if your going very low but may be worth considering!

On the later 1.8T's yea, go more than about 35mm and the arb fouls the driveshafts, so you have to either fit some droplinks or get an aftermarket arb, different setup on the 4motions though.
