tappits?.....

ask yourself why so cheap !!
if its realy loud i don't think its the tappets,if your un-sure about it i would walk away theres plenty of mk11 around for cheap money, but if you have set your heart on it ask a fitter or AA or RAC to inspect it for you, but as i said there lots of good ones around and hundreds of crap as well so be carefull,
dont get burned m8 :-\

ok well thanks for the info, its only ?100!! haha, looks mint apart from that noise.
anyway ive seen another one thats goin for ?600, again the bodyworks in good condition, 100k miles, but the engine cuts after about 2 minutes, have to let it sit for a while then u can start it again......any ideas what that might be?

Be worth trying to find out what that noise is. For a 100 quid could be a really good buy if all it is is some kind of mechanical contact...........engine could be fine. :-\

what about the one where the engine cuts? any ideas what it might be?
sorry to be a pest, i REALLY want one, oh and its a 5 door....think i shud stick to finding a 3 door?

For ?100 quid its a bargain even if the engine is knackered, you can always break it on ebay or similar and get a whole load of money back, selling it in bits.
I would get it and source another engine. If the rest of the car is mint like you say then it will be worth keeping.

Sounds familiar, I too was offered a very cheap 16v 3 years ago,?150 in the trade. Body work perfect but again very loud noise from top end. So bad in fact I wrote the engine off as scrap and bought the car for spares. Curiousity getting the better of me I took the valve cover off to find that all that noise was coming from a very slack cam chain (should be tight between two camshafts) slapping the top of the valve cover. Piece of piss to fix and the chain was only ?6/7 pounds as I remember. Went on to strip and rebuild the vehicle nut and bolt, reprayed black on 17 inch BBS split rims. If the noise is very loud yet the engine seems to run fine.....Chain I`d put money on it!!!!!!!!

I think it depends if you can do the work yourself. If you can then i would consider buying.

Not so sure about chain.
If it is, listen to it when it idles and listen out for the noise of a chain. It will be very distinct noise. If you can hear it then there is slack. If not - may not be chain. A tight chain should be almost silent. (or at least drowned out).
If its tappets, i always thought that it didn't go "knock" as so much as "tap".
Sounds more like something more serious has gone. But if you have the time it won't cost much to find out.

Tinman

I agree , i think the knocking noise is bottom end engine bearings. New engine needed or engine rebuild.
