Title: CV Boots

Has anyone tried the wrap around and glue style CV Boots?? if so are they any good? Was offered one today in Halfords they seem quick and simple to fit but not sure how long they would last?  ???

tried them on a few motors in my time and they have never been worth doing , me thinks a complete boot is even cheaper than one of those blue peter ones, save time and effort and do it right first time

I've never used one of those kits however I share the view of 'golfvr6' and 'kevin' on this one. I reckon you'll end up having to do it properly in the long run..............

Take the shaft off the car, and bang the joint off with a soft mallet, or hammer and wood. Once you done the job once, it becomes easy.

Hardest and most tedious part of the job are those 6 driveshaft to gearbox flange bolts.........what a PITA.

Quite easy to undo the 6 flange bolts if you get someone on the brakes! i agree its a right pain to try and do it on your own.

I've just done this on my Mk3 inside cv boot. All is pretty straight forward, especially if as previously mentioned you can get someone to put the brakes on whilst undoing the 6 bolts on the joint. You will also need a good breaker bar and socket to undo the driveshaft bolt (my old socket snapped on the first attempt).

The Haynes manual says that the driveshaft should then tap out with a soft mallet, however, mine needed pushing all the way with a hub puller so be prepared.

Whilst you at it you may as well do both ends for the few quid they cost.

Always thought those glue together boots are sh!te, I mean when you glue things your supposed to have both mating surfaces free from contaminate and those who have done CV joints will know that the grease goes bloody everywhere.

Talking of which, one of my recently done outer CV boots came off last night throwing grease everywhere..............and before you ask, golfvr6, yes I did get it from GSF.  ::)
