When i turn the ignition on my Vr6 before firing up the engine i can hear a buzzing / Humming noise coming from the engine bay area
Ive been told its the coil making it
Can anyone explain what it is please ?
TiA

Could be, what about relays?? Relays are prone to chatter so it might be one of those.
-
umm... is it possible for you to look in the engine bay to see what is doing it yourself.. ?
the coil is a funny lil cube thing. a few inches normally mounted facing into the engine bay in the vicinity of the distributor.. on my car its over on the RHS.. wouldnt be surprised if its not in a similar place on a '6

Does the noise go when you start the engine?
if so check the electric after run water pump, it is mounted at the top right of the cylinder head.
-
The noise is coming from a round cap to the right of the engine if looking down on it and a load of wires are going into it and when you unscrew it with the ignition on the sound goes away.
Is it something to do with the coil ?

If it is you don't want to be anywhere near it, all you will know is a big flash and a thump as you land a few feet away from your car. There's umpteen THOUSAND volts in the HT side of the ignition. Be careful. A photo might help though, preferably before you attain escape velocity and fire off into orbit

sounds like the distributor to me?..
are all the leads the same and lead to the spark plugs?
from what i remember the coil has two connections.. thats all..
like the guy before me said.. a picture would be best :)

Heres a picture i took of the area where the humming is coming from

hmm.. on my valver the coil pack is directly behind that area u circled under where the alarm horn is...? see that big chunky cable on its own that comes over the top of the cover and loops into there i think that goes to to the coil.
also on my car the disitributor is exactly where that bit u circled is.. but cant see one.. the ht leads go elsewhere.. lol.. think thats why the coil lead snakes off across with the leads to somewhere else.. i dunno what the '6 does? for a dizzie equiv?

As i said before the electric water pump is just to the left of that wiring connection, are you sure its not that making the noise?
-
Well if those wires are to the water pump then it could be coming from there because if i un screw it whilst its making the noise the noise goes
-
That wire connector feeds loads of things, well i suppose that much is obvious
The water pump is supposed to buzz when you turn the ignition on, it then goes off when you start the car.
I would look closer at it.
-
So all Vr6'S make the buzzing noise when the ignition is on ?
-
If you look like bolland said to the left of the connector there is a water pump, place your finger on it and see if you can feel it when you hear the buzzing.
Also I wouldnt keep disconnecting that connector with the ignition on as you may knacker the ECU with a power spike.
Your car hasnt got the coil which is what overseer suggests as as you can clearly from your pic the HT leads coming from the coil pack.
