just had a looksee on site
Hockenheim R
Dinx
-
yeah hockenheims, that look like they've been welded up and re-drilled!?

yeah.. looks like they used to be 5 stud alloy, seems dodgy to me.
-
yeah not like they are rare or expensive enough to bother with.......................
unless thats how they are cast then drilled depending on what fitment?

agreed

actually, are you sure that they aren't made like that in the first place and they have a blanking plate?
that way they would cast one wheel, and drill 4 or 5 holes as required. the other issue is that trying to drill 1/3 of a hole (for the cut out) is extremely difficult in the first place.
-
that would make sense
the wheels will be cast anyway, they wouldnt drill the holes
-
cheers for all the info guys!

thats what i was told, you lot got me worried there for a while!
thanx again for info
cheers

the holes would have to be drilled. you cant create a wheel with multiple holes unless you want a few stess issues, and and balancing the buggers would a nightmare as one of the holes is shared. the casting contains the cut outs for the two differing stud patterns.
i would even go as far as saying that the wheel could of been drilled for differing sizes of 4stud/5stud. (eg differing distances from the centre).
-
yeah but they will be made so they can EITHER be 4 or 5 stud, anymore holes and its not tsw's problem
and if the customer wants to put more holes in as long as its clamped up nicely on a pillar drill it wont be a problem
anyway cast holes are stronger than drilled holes, just look at drilled brake discs, if you do it yourself at home, they are gonna crack at the drilled holes, whereas the factory cross drilled brakes will be cast

the old brembo website had an faq that was quite clear. it makes no difference whether holes are cast or drilled. they had researched it and decided there was no difference. its another boyracer myth. sry.
edited:
found a site who lifted the brembo faq:

yeah nice one
im saying it because i understand what happens to metal in processes such as drilling and casting, not because some boy racer told me, im just using that as an example cos its a car forum.
stop arguing with me tinman its annoying
-
i'm just using a company like brembo who have done research into it. but hey, what do they know. not like they employ teams of engineers or anything like that. probably a couple of guys in a shed.
-
dont you think they are trying to justify why they drill the holes in their discs? which is a cheaper process than casting the discs with holes  and why are porsche and ferrari etc discs cast with holes? give me a sarcastic answer for all those questions then
-
you are right of course.
http://www.brembo.com/ENG/Racing/BremboGoesRacing/Who.htm
its not like anyone important uses brembo. i mean, they are a couple of village idiots in a shed just making any old crap up to sell.
-
you are right of course.
cheers

cmon ladies, settle this in the only fair way.. a duel
handbags at dawn
-
at a guess i would assume if you drilled your brakes at home then the reason they would crack is due to them being hardened steel. the excess heat generated in a localised area by trying to drill hardened steel which would be harder to drill would cause a stress fracture due to uneaven expansion of of the less flexable hardened steel.
it would be easy to drill the steel before hardening and/or increasing the carbon %age (ie by case hardening) in the steel.

Now here!! (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=72250&item=7946922331&rd=1) on ebay, Just in case anyone's interested

insane if your going to bid on them i wouldnt advise driving them with them damaged tyres, they are an mot failure and as such illegal as they could blow out.
-
HI mate, thanx for info
no they are mine., Had them for a while, got them off a mate, who was scrapping his car,
And am selling as they don't fit on my MK3, as mine is a 5 stud,
But reason started whole post, wanted to sell them with as best discription possible
as i want people to know, excatly what they are bidding on, therefore not ripping anyone off
i did wonder about the 2 tyres being damaged, thats why i pointed them out, with photo's aswell
shame as i have had these sitting in my garage for a while now. and they held the air perfectly, and all tyres are almost new, with very little usage on then
but they are a definate MOT failure you say?
any idea if they can be fixed, or is that it?
thanx again
Ben

-
P.s! that your cat!
-
she's my cat but she is evil,
thought you were buying them, to the best of my knowlege they are an mot failure (99% sure), check if you want to make absoultely shure but be careful when selling them as you dont want to be held to anything.
you got the camper aswell? i want one but dont have the space of the money
-
ha ha! evil cat! looks like she's going for your tyres he he
cats are so wicked! love um
yep campers mine,. still a work in project thought
done loads year before last, then had a year off last year,
but this year going to get it finished in time for Bug Jam
i hope!
anyway, thanx for info on tyres
may take them to my mates garage, see what he says
thanx again
Ben
