If I cleaned my TDI would I actually gain anything and what would I clean? Is it simple to do?

In what way are you on about?
As in cleaning the inlet manifold, EGR valve, intercooler etc?
Or simply cleaning the engine bay

EGR etc...
-
Less smoke, better MPG, better performance
Personally I'd ditch the EGR and fit a delete pipe from Allard
-
sorry for late reply....just got in from work....whats the price of that thing then?
So just cleaning the EGR or infact delelting it would cause better performance, more or better mpg?

or with a breather

or even cheaper this but it states requiring fitting large bore inlet manifold?

Why is everyone deleting the EGR valve, why did VW put it there in the first place? Just worries me as I have read bad things like their VW dub smoking more and turbo dying etc  Just be my luck for mine to go thats all
-
All it does it provide two operations
1-Allows to reduce the emissions by recirculating some of the exhaust gasses at idle. This is not needed in this country as diesels are not tested on emissions.
2-The car will somewhat splutter to a stop when you turn the key off. The EGR has a anti-splutter valve that closes a butterfly valve starving the engine of air. In some very very rare case the an engine can run off its own oil.

so all in all not much point in spending 50 pound or so......oh well ok

You could just take if off and give it a good clean and block up the vac pipe running into the top of the EGR.
-
just worried that i might ruin something or damage the egr valve and cost more money...car has done 112k and I have never cleaned it and owned it from 62500k.
-
I would say its a bit of a mess in there at 112k. Take off the clip and have a look in there with the valve in situ. I would be inclined to remove the whole system including the intercooler to give it a good flush, its all not that hard to do. Mine was filthy after 80k.
Oh also removing the vac pipe/deleting the EGR gives a slight MPG/performance increase.
-
ok will do it at some point this summer as only having a day off aint enough time really
-
As per forum tradition take lots of pictures :afro:
You might as well take off your manifold just to make sure you have de gunked out the whole system.

I cleaned mine at around 160K and it was very heavily gunged up. I also removed the inlet manifold and cleaned the whole lot up.
Here is a useful article on it:-

Following that I carried out a procedure in VAGCOM to stop the EGR. So instead of physically removing it or replacing it I have used the software to stop it. Procedure is here:-

I now have 210K on the clock and it is fine

There are a lot of other useful articles on the that site. Well worth a read:-
