want to get rid of the ghastly unsightly black trim. been told filling and smoothing is an option but is there anyway to do it??
-
do you mean the arch pieces etc? i use to like the de-arched look, but kept mine on and prefer them. i think it makes it a gti, but as you may be aware its a big debate de arch or not?
and please dont fill and smooth them it will look awful.

You cannot remove the side trims as it will leave holes.
You need to pick up GL spec trim which is painted and smooth

i have a gl, they aint the same colour and they look mank!!!!! has to go, i know te holes are there, so why if its not done properly can the holes not be filed too? lng job yes but takeing the door cards out, filiing proerly from both sides and making sure its smooth and flush should be simple as,

If it helps, this was my GTI which I fitted all CL spec trim too, the general view on here is it is not a GTI without the trim but I think it looks cleaner, smoother plus gets rid of all the watertraps etc.

Looks horrid plus you will need plates welding over as you have a recess as well.

Thats what i was thinking wayne, If you just use filler and then decide you want a sound system or hit a nasty pothole, its all coming out..
Welding is your best friend here, I think it would give a really tidy euro look! But would take masses of work for Marginal gain :)
