Your going to need a press to replace the bearing.
-
+1 Press required.
Take the hub off and take it to a garage.
-
excellent guide, as you can see you need a few special tools:

its for a MKIV but process for you is similar, you prob wont have abs so ignore that bit. if it was me id have wheel bearing housing off and pop down to local friendly garage, give em a few tax free bob in the old back pocket and they should have it done it for you within an hour

Its a lot easier to remove the whole housing than change the bearing in situ with special tools.
None of those special tools are needed if you remove the whole housing and use a press, or take the housing to a garage.
A bit like this:-

+1 on taking it to a garage, it's usually only taking 6 or so bolts off to remove the hub and get a new bearing pressed in.
-
Wood... Get a branch, cut it out, smack the wheel bearing out.... Worked for me as woods softer then metal, so no fook ups on the hub side. New bearing just needed a soft tap with rubber mallet and went in willingly, circlip on and wollah, redneck style.
-
That's impressive

I'm being serious, its what I did on my 6n and its still going till this day, can't beat redneck mechanics especially with the aid of a father encouraging you that its a good idea whilst sober

I guess you were lucky, never done one yet that has not needed pressing out.
-
The bearing had collapsed so I'm not sure if that makes a difference, but due to the density differnce the hub was not damaged or marked, it did 30,000 miles on the new bearing I put on before I changed cars (I imagine its still ongoing) .
Only thing is, when a wheel bearing is on its way out, what's the noise it makes? As I cannot remember what it sounded like, I remember when it collapesed and the vibration on the way home (happened about 1 mile away on the way home). As the golf is very squeky on the passengers front wheel, I have ruled out calipers/brakes and the supension. Can't blame it on bushes as they in a good state still, CV boots are all fine, so my assumption is ball joint or wheel bearing, it started as a minor squeks here and there, now it squeks away non stop even at 30mph.

you did well yo get it in with just a mallet without damage, if they dont go in square they dont like it. fair play to you :)
if it was me though bearing carrier off -> garage. i am planning to get myself a press one of these days, but i need to make some room first
-
You are welcome to use my press if needed john
-
i allways find getting the old ones out is the issue. i has a 20T hydralic press and quite often see round about 15T of pressure indicated before they move.
i depending on situation, mood and bearing in question sometimes i tap them in sometimes i press them in

are you a local to bracknell then chap? I shall keep you in mind if you are cheers :)
