Just been to have my tracking done and been told that they cannot set it up due to excessive play in the bottom ball joint.
How can i tell if this is the case and they are not just pulling a fast one as i dont really trust the garage and just took it there out of convenience?
just had my suspension fitted last week and all seemed fine then according to my friends that fitted it?
Been quoted £147.20 for all the work doing.
-
Cheap and easy enough to sort yourself to be honest.
Jack the car up and get a friend to rock the wheel then see if you have any play.
-
cheers wayne, is it an easy repair? think they said it comes with lower wishbone?
-
Easy repair. Can be done with hub in place.
3 Bolts hold the ball joint in place, then one big bolt holds the ball joint to the hub. Fitting is reversal or removal.
-
so not worth the hour labour they will charge me then! i have some handy mates who will no doubt sort it for a few beers if i get the parts.
i'll have a look tonight. cheers for the help
edit - will i just need the ball joint or wishbone as well?
link to parts would be very handy

£147.50 is ridiculous. They should be shot.

anything else that could be changed at the same time for convenience??
-
wishbone doesn't have to be changed. Just the ball joint.

replace both while you're at it, check condition of the ARB links too, if they look worn/cracked/soft then change them, they're nearby.

cheers khare, garage wanted £63.76 for parts alone, but jow public can buy them for £11.00 per side  unreal!!!!!
well i'm gonna take it to another garage that i trust for the tracking and if they say the same then it will be beers on me for my handy mates
cheers again!
-
Tell them you'll provide the parts.
-
shop around most factors do the b/joint around £8
-
cool thanks will do
they still want 1 hours labour! £52.88
think i'll try tackle it myself with a bit of supervision.
-
147 is nothing to what ford dealer wanted - try 260 quid :D
-
That's cheap for Ford. They charged my Gran £400 to change a rear wishbone bush.

:D robbers arent they!!
tbh mate, i had same problem 1 month agao, never done a wishbone before - not a trained mechanic, took an hour and a half tops just taking my time, and also i think it was on horneys advice, soaked the relevant bolts for 3 days in wd40 twice a day, bit excessive but certainly had no problems getting bolts out :D
-
one thing i will add....mark the position of the old ball joint before removal and refit using these marks for alignment (otherwise you'll knock the camber out! and that's £50)
-
That aswell!!
I didn't bother, cos mine was out anyway so needed it tracking and camber sorting!

I might be wrong here, but if i remember right they should be central in the slots.
