hey all i need to take off my steering wheel, its got airbag. i dont want it to go off in me face, anything special i need to do? thanks.
-
Yes.
1) disconnect the battery
2) leave everything for 20 to 30mins
3) then undo the bolts at the back of the steering wheel
4) lift off airbag, disconnect the plugs and place face up outside / away from the car.
Reverse the above for refitting, after you have connected the battery make sure the warning light goes out all ok.

I'd place it face up outside of the car, otherwise earth will have another satellite

Interesting reading.....I did mine the same way as Wayne said but I just checked mine on the grass when it was out. Guess I will handle with more care next time

Never place an airbag module, or steering wheel assembly fitted with an airbag, face (trim side) down or with the trim against a hard surface

thanks guys. if it ever stops raining i can do it!!
-
Would imagine that if it's face down and accidently goes off then it would be like a missile ?? Hopefully I will never need to remove one again

I wouldnt worry too much about the airbag once its dissconnected.
I have a different wheel for my Passat (4 spoke same as Golf) that I havent got around to fitting and that has been put on loads of different surfaces and places!

do some youtube/google searches for airbag detonations, its a sight to behold. mythbusters did a few episodes on em as well. just try to stay away from em while they're out the car and dont handle them roughly and you should be ok, they arnt easy to set off.

if you've never seen/heard one go off they're seriously violent!
