Title: Rattling from underneath!!
Post by: gti_tom on 20 July 2010, 08:40
Hey guys

Small piece of advice needed please :)

The golf seems to rattle at low revs, so i took a look underneath and theres a pan which has come off two peg like things. (there not screws before anyone says! :P) the thing is the metal on the pan arond the pegs has just broken off because its stupidly flimsey... can anyone suggest something to hold it up?

Thanks,

+1 Def sounds like the heatshield. New studs can be got from VW pretty cheaply, as RJ said something like a coke can can be used to repair the holes

If its the heatshield under the CAT then just rip it off!

Just make sure its nothing else like middle exhaust mounts.

sounds like the exhaust hitting the heatshield.. same happened with mine.. you need to replace the rubber bushes, here's some on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-GOLF-MK3-GTI-16V-EXHAUST-MOUNTING-RUBBER-BUSHES-/320563240365?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4aa30eddad#ht_500wt_1154

the c***s at power flow ruined mine so i stuck it back on with chimney flue silicone, takes about 1000 degres so wont melt. get a few tubes of that and get under the car. wont ever come off again, b & q to the rescue!

Well... heatshield is in a nice crumpled state in a box in the garage for the dustman :)

Next on the list, new backbox and front grill :)
