Title: Warning to everyone- Please read this !
Post by: H12 on 19 July 2010, 19:05
Hi All

Just thought I'd let you all know whilst staying at my parents last night, some scumbags broke into their house trying to get their filthy hands on the keys for my GTI which was parked on their drive whilst we were all asleep upstairs. I know this because my dad has a mark 4 golf and they found his keys, thought they were mine, and tried to get into my car. Thank god I always keep my keys with me and no damage was done to my folks or the cars and the scumbags only got away with a bit of money...

So guys, please do not leave your car keys where the scum of the earth can find them if they break in to your property. The police say it's so common for people to leave their car keys right by the front door so it's like takng candy from a baby... scary...

Sorry to hear about the attempted theft.
I hope it has not left any mental scars on any of your family members.

My folks live in the south Hertfordshire area. Apparently a team of people tried to get into 8 properties last night around that area targeting desirable motors but some of the thieves were caught in the early hours. Oh and in case anyone gets any ideas, the door has now been changed...

Thanks mate. My mum's pretty shaken up but it could have been far worse.

How awful. Makes me sick to the stomach.
I do hope your parents are emotionally ok as are you.
As the recession bites more and more theives will emerge. The GTi is the most sort after car. I am seriously considering installing a tracker.
I have a very secure German steel front door with 21 bolts. It is gun proof etc!
My window glass is toughened and a thrown brick will bounce off very nicely!
Can't be too careful especially in London!
Take care.

How awful that must be.

Glad everything is sort of OK - the shock will take a while...

To be honest, I'd rather they took my car than came into me and my wife's bedroom to get my keys.

Yep, mine are nicely in view.

You were very lucky they were in a rush, if they had only targeted your car they could have got very violent looking for the keys. Glad all is ok though.

I'm afraid that's my view too.
I don't leave the keys beside the front door...but if they look, they's find them.

Rather an insured car get stolen than my family be faced with some drugged up pikey carrying an axe.

At least nobody was physically hurt in this case....lets hope the mental scars heal quickly.

I live in South Hertfordshire as well and unfortunately have been a victim twice. I live in a semi-rural village. Very quiet area.

Exactly the same form. Gang targetting up to 10 homes, breaking in and taking keys.

The first break in I had they took both my cars at 6am in the morning, saw both cars reversing down the drive and a Landcruiser full of blokes waiting in the road.

Now have professionally fitted alarm, CCTV and a dog.

Police said that if they want a car they will take it. Advised not to take keys upstairs anymore. Not worth the potential violence.

Yeah, this is very common up in Liverpool and feel for you.

They are the scum that is on the bottom of the scum imho.

I had a mate with an brand new M5 and first night home he parked his car outside his neighbours house. Yes, his neighbours got broken into but thankfully they were not at home that evening otherwise things may have gotten ugly. Needless to say the scum left empty handed but it is a sad reflection on society today when you think that not that many years ago (okay maybe a fair few) you could leave your front door open all day and not worry about your house getting burgled. How times change!

Thanks everyone for the kind comments. The folks are both over the worst of the shock now

Tbh, I know what  a number of you mean about leaving the keys in full view so the t*ssers don't hurt anyone but interesting enough, the Police said they are more likely to run away if they are disturbed.

I know lots of people will say they don't want to take the chance, the car is just a car after all, but it sickens me to the pit of my stomach that some twisted individuals feel they have the god given right to steal peoples' hard earned property

Apparently a number of people from the gang have been arrested over the last few days so that's good news...

You're right, at the end of the day a car is just a car and can be replaced under insurance with nobody being physically or mentally injured. But to basically leave the keys out for them to help themselves is madness in my view. It just encourages them.
If they came into my house then they play by my rules as far as I'm concerned.
I'm not an aggressive person at all but I'd have no qualms in introducing them to my 5-iron
